I've decided I want to get my first tattoo. I have a hideous half dollar sized scar on my inner leg just above my ankle that I want to cover with a tattoo. I went to a tattoo parlor tonight and they looked at it and said it would be no problem. After talking with an artist for a little while we came up with an idea. The scar was created when I took a 90 mph fastball thrown by my best friend, who was killed in an accident a few years ago. So we were thinking of doing a baseball breaking through from underneath skin,  he also suggested that where the commisioner's signature goes on the ball, we use his signature or initials instead to memorialize him. I love the concept, hated the sketch he made. It looked like a baby's head crowning just before birth! I might do flames around the ball instead since it was a flaming fastball that got me, or maybe wings...not sure...Does anybody know where i can find or commssion a better design before I take the big plunge? Is this whole thing some kind of post gastric bypass crisis like a mid-life crisis?

Mike,

Make sure you go to a reputable shop, and one that is inspected by the local health department.  Make sure they use an autoclave to sterilize, not chemicals, and that they use new needles every time.  Sounds common sense, but some fly by nite shops recycle.

One thing I would warn ya, tattooing on a scar is hard to do, that's why you want an experienced shop.  I'm already planning my 'reward'   It will be a Phoenix, for my rebirth  as the new me! I would love to have Chris Garver (Miami Ink)do it, as he is known as one of the best in the world, but it's hard to get in with them. Dale

You should look into that. I did but you need to submit a video and tell a story about yourself and why you're gettiing it done, blah, blah, blah. I am not a social, talkatve guy so it wasn't for me, but I am sure they would be more than welcome to someone that has gone through what we have.

Hey Mike, I too am getting some ink done real soon. It was actually supposed to start next Saturday but with my past week I need to pu**** back at least another month. Don't rush into it. I too have heard it is tough to tattoo over scar tissue. Go on google and look up baseball tattoos and go to the sites available. Make sure the shop is reputable, you like the artist, and especially like the tattoo you're thinking of. I got my first when I was 19 and the second one I got was cool when I got it but now it is just kinda silly. The one I am getting done soon is covering up that one. It's going to end up being a half sleeve of a dragon with traditional Japanese background and somewhere in the mix she is going incorporate two hibiscus flowers, one for my wife, and one for my son.  I thought of getting a Phoenix also, but I couldn't find one that I liked. That may be my next one, a nice big one on my back.

I've always liked the phoenix used by the city of Phoenix, AZ where I lived for 11 years... It's a good, simple design, I think it plays on the Hohokam or Pima indians that were native to the Salt River Valley.

Tom, Yeah, you have to apply with video to be on the show, but they all still do private stuff. Problem is, they're so indemand, they are booked for months ahead. I dig the idea of dragons too...  Mike, yeah that Phoenix is nice and simple, and would have clean lines, but I'd like to have the more ornamentive kind that looks like it's made of flame.  Would take just the right artist or it would be a mess.  This is art someone made for the Xmen movies, but it's the closest type I've seen... without the woman of course.
