How much protien per meal?
With having to eat at least 100g of protein daily it is a bit of a struggle to get it all in as well having to drink 100 oz's of fluids. I am 12 days out and not very hungry. I have seen advertized "Protein Bullets" which is flavoured water with 42g of protein in 3.1 oz. which could help tremendously. My question's are; How much maximum protein should a single meal have? How much protein can the body absorb in a single meal?
Papabear, Just my approach- My Doc required 100gms+ everyday. That was the 'minimum' he set for me. His claim was that it helped speed the tissue growth and since I had open wound complications, I needed all the help I could get. The side effect was that I never lost 1 hair! (or at least I attribute my full hair to that) I got my protein by "sneaking" it in to my diet. I used Unjury Un-flavored powder and added it to Carb Control Yogurt in the morning. I also would stir it into just about any thing- Mix it into some low-fat Mayo, And add it to my tuna salad. Stir it into all soups, chili and such. I also found a way to get in protein without noticing In my "water intake." The ZeroCarb Isopure Drinks. Now, by themselves, they taste like Sucking on old pennies. Icck! But, pour just a little into some Crystal-Lite And you’ll never notice it. That way, as you sip along throughout the day You’re getting protein constantly. I assume you could do the same with the "Proplete" protein ‘shots.’ Now, the typical digestive system can only process for absorption Approx. 25 gms to 50 gms at one time anyway, So loading up all at once with a horrible tasting Super-Protein Shake, Is usually wasting about 10gms anyway. NOTE: Some of the "absorption equation" is dependent on the kind of protein you are consuming. Here's the deal - you need to break down all protein you eat into micro sized molecules called peptides in order for you to absorb them. If they don't absorb they end up in the colon – Bad gas… On average, you can figure that you get about 55-60% of most proteins you eat into the blood or absorbed. This is for animal proteins like fish, chicken, egg, etc. If the source is plant such as soy, pea, rice, wheat etc. You can figure that you will only absorb 15-35%. (Our gut doesn’t do a very efficient job of absorbing these proteins.) Now if you eat a hydrolyzed protein (like Hydrolyzed Whey Protein) that is over 50% di and tri peptides, you will absorb most all of it and the limit "per meal" varies greatly from person to person. It has to do with rate that food passes through intestines, so if you are experiencing a little ‘loose stool action,’ how much is absorbed is far less than for someone who’s plumbing is running at normal pace. Yes? The hydrolyzed proteins are easiest absorbed, followed by animal proteins, with plant derived proteins bringing up the rear. By spreading protein consumption throughout the day, you get a fuller benefit of every gram. Yes? One other tip- Low-Carb Slimfast. I pour just a splash into my De-caf coffee. I’m not drinking the whole can at once, Just a little, with each cup of De-caf. I generally don’t put anything in my mouth that doesn’t have at least a little protein. Rather than trying to get it all at once I "trickle" it in all day long. Best Wishes- Dx
One thing I’d have to say… They look like "Marital Aids" that require batteries…. (the women were certainly lining up in Lexington…) I think the slogan was- "Use Profect! You’ll never go back to a Man!" If you use these, Dispose of containers immediately. They were pretty palatable and in a concentrated ‘shot’ You could throw back 25 gms of protein and not even taste it. (as one of the guys there discovered- they make great Tequila shooting vials as well J ) Best Wishes- Dx
