I can walk / jog 3 miles now, before maybe 3 blocks Made tons of GREAT friends on OH! The clinic made me quit smoking before they would approve me, Wow can I breath better now! I can PLAY with my kids! Libido...let's just say improved (maybe more kids down the road? ) The list goes on and on The advice I have gotten on here has been so numerous and high in quality I don't even no where to start. my best advice is to hang around these boards as much as possible with one caveat: Every surgeon has their own requirements and you should never deviate from them based on something you learned here without first consulting them on it! Here is a great re-post of WLS tips from something a lady at my WLS clinic posted on their forum: 1. As soon as you can get up and walk after surgery. 2. Exercise: DUH, you gotta do it. Start slow if you have to and it DOES get easier and better. 3. Listen to your body and you will go thru Plateaus. You will lose a lot at the beginning and then it will tapper off. 4. Always and I mean ALWAYS remember this. DO not give yourself a goal and if you do not lose weight for 1-2 months. DO not flip out. I felt that if I gave myself a goal and I did not meet it, Then what? Beat myself up? Be happy for what you lose. So as I said if you hit a plateau it will be ok, Don’t freak out. 5. My other advice is take pictures. I know you hate the way you look now and not happy. But once you get down and lose it. You will be happy you did. Try to take before and after pictures in the same place so you can compare and take them each month. 6. Take measurements. BECAUSE some months that you do not lose weight you lose inches. The 2 months I did not lose weight. I lost 10 inches. Measure EVERYTHING. Neck, arm, wrist 7. I know this is going to be HARD to do, but DO not weigh yourself EVERYDAY. Once a week. 8. You may or may not lose hair, it is NOT always related to the amount of protein you intake. People have had PLENTY of protein, take vitamins, biotin, and calcium and still lose their hair. It did come out in clumps from 4-6 months. But grew back without any problem. All the hair grow shampoos you use, really does not help. 9. When you start eating solid food, it is essential that you chew thoroughly. You will not be able to eat steaks or other chunks of meat if they are not ground or chewed thoroughly. 10. Do not drink fluids while eating. They will make you feel full before you have consumed enough food. 11. For the first 4-6 weeks patients have almost no appetite. Over the next several months the appetite returns, but it tends not to be a ravenous hunger. If, however, you haven’t yet dealt with the emotional causes of your overeating, you may experience “head hunger” or “emotional hunger” 12. Take your Colace-“Stool softener” Constipation is a common complaint after WLS. It is caused by decreased food and water intake and, in some people, supplemental iron, or narcotic pain killers, tranquilizers, and antidepressants. It is often aggravated by weak abdominal muscles or busy schedules wherein people defer having a bowel movement when the urge exists. 13. Add fiber to your diet. Eat high fiber breakfast (bran-based cereals, oatmeal) and add vegetables to other meals. They make unprocessed bran found in the cereal section of the grocery store can be taken with juice, or sprinkled into salad, meatloaf, cereal, etc. The same thing can be done with Metamucil, or psyllium seed. 14. Some people say “Stock up on protein drinks now” NO NO NO, because and not always, your taste can change. Something you LOVE and adore now, after WLS, you may hate and despise. Something you hate now you may love after WLS. 15. It is important that you take multivitamin/mineral supplement. Every day for the rest of your life. 16. WATER... WATER... WATER... 64oz/day... SIP SIP SIP. Slowly....Drink 64 oz of water every day FOR LIFE NO straws either (to avoid too much painful gas)! Not drinking enough water leads not only to muscles aches, fatigue, dry skin, dry lips, dry eyes, constipation, foggy-headedness, etc. but it will slow and/or stop your weight loss. 17. Concentrate on eating protein foods such as fish, cheese, eggs, poultry, and seafood. At mealtimes, eat protein foods first before any other foods. 18. In the first 2 months, eat only canned or very tender, well-cooked fruits and vegetables. - Do not eat any raw fruits or vegetables, except bananas. - Do not eat the skins of any cooked vegetables or fruit This is not a tip, but more of an FYI: Some of you have heard of “dumping syndrome” Some of you may or may not get all or some of the symptoms. Dumping Syndrome - aka Rapid gastric emptying. You get NO warning. It occurs when food passes too quickly from the stomach into the small intestine. Signs and symptoms often start as soon as 30 minutes after eating. Symptoms may include a combination of nausea, uncomfortable fullness, abdominal pains or cramping, and diarrhea, or weakness, sweating, dizziness or lightheadedness, and fast heart rate. Dumping can be provoked by eating very sweet or sugary foods. Reduce intake of sweets and notify a physician if these symptoms occur. Initially, partially digested food may rapidly draw excess fluid from the bloodstream into the intestine. This causes cramping and diarrhea and can also cause low blood pressure, resulting in lightheadedness and a rapid heartbeat. Later, you may experience symptoms of low blood sugar due to a rapid increase in blood sugar, which causes your body to release too much insulin.
