Carbonation

Hey boys. I found some 4C sticks for water bottle that is an energy drink. 5 calories per stick blah, blah, blah. I mixed a couple this morning for the workday and noticed it said "light carbonation". I know carbonation is a gray area someplaces. What is everyone's opinion? I noticed a little fizz when shaking them. I would imagine it is nowhere near the carbo as soda or red bull. Should I nix it altogether?

Do what works for you Your mileage may vary There are alot of options out there. Carbonation today, pop tarts tomorrow,...whats next,...cheeseburgers??? Your choice Your pouch Your waistline Your life As long as you can look yourself in the mirror and feel good, go with it.  If no, go to Plan B. Joe

Hi Tom,  I am five months post-op tomorrow. I haven't had a soda or carbonated beverage in over a year.  I know a few people locally  that have had WLS. I have noticed that the ones that are drinking soda again are also the ones that have slipped back to old eatting habits and are not doing as well as they want to.   I have made a drastic change to my insides and have committed to changing what I eat as well. One of the reasons I say this is, soda was one the hardest things for me to give up and at five months out I am not finished loosing and don't want to do any thing to impede my weight loss. I am afraid if I return to soda then I will be lax in other areas as well. I find I do much better if I get into a routine and stick to it. If I eat at certain times and stay away from certain foods. I don't want to fall back into old habits.  My surgeon told me not to ever drink it again. There are alot of opinions on this issue, but I choose not to drink it because of the aforementioned reasons. I don't think that if you are completely healed it will damage you. For those that are newly post-op, definitely  stay away. Bottom line is it's your choice.  pan head

Sucks but I am just gonna toss them. Even if it is a little carbonation I don't want anything bad to come of it.  I have a hard time eating as it is, let alone screwing with fluids.

I had something similar, beverage packet with light carbonation that I didn't know about.  After the first one, I mixed all of them up in a water pitcher and let it rest overnight in the fridge.  The next day, all the carbonation was gone and I poured that into empty water bottles. Not recommending this as a long-term solution, just to get rid of what you have.

Good choice! My doc said NO CARBONATION, never again! and I won't. Thats ok with me though. I don't drink liquor (haven't for nearly 25 years now) and I don't miss it a bit. I used to enjoy a good dark beer every now and then (less than 6 per year) but not having them is no big deal. I did drink a lot of diet soda though (2 ltrs at a time!) but haven't had one since before my surgery. Sometimes I am tempted to cheat a little when it comes to 1/2 hour minimum between drinking and eating but I am afraid that if I do, other bad habits will come back also, so I don't. If I can stay away from the TV then I have NO PROBLEM with staying on program but sitting in front of the tube, I used to eat nearly non stop so that is a STRONG urge to overcome. I now sit with a 1ltr bottle of crystal light and sip from it or sit down with a couple of SF popcicles. Popcorn in the movies is still on the menu but at a vastly reduced rate! The wife and I now share a med size bag and have leftovers,  while before I used to eat an extra-large all by myself, not to mention the 2 boxes of candy that I also ate with an extra-large drink!

Yeah I am really trying to keep to the "true" program for as long as I can. By that I mean I have just started eating a little more between meals. Mostly string cheese, beef jerky, and other high protein things.  I only eat fruit and veg with meals when it fits. Still drinking my shakes. Stop drinking 30 minutes before meals and don't start till 60 minutes after. I am only between 10 & 20 pounds from goal depending on who you ask. I would like to not modify away from anything that they have told me for a long time.

The best recommendation on this is to follow your surgeon's advice, whichever camp they are in. Different surgeons have different opinions on this, and not everyone who has carbonation immediately starts going out and eating everything in sight.  Some people who have carbonation have issues. Some people who don't have carbonation have issues. If your surgeon tells you NO carbonation and you break that rule, then as someone pointed out, what's the next rule you are going to break... It's more a matter of what rules you follow (or don't follow) and what those rules are that will determine your success or failure than just carbonation. Good luck - ...Nick

I think the big issue with the carbonation is that it "stretches" the pouch...or stomach.   Although I do know of plenty of RNYers who are over a year post op and drink diet soda.....I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just saying thats what they do.   I had the DS, and avoided soda for over a year, and just started to drink it again (the diet version) about a month ago....about 12-24 oz a day, in addition to over 100 oz of water a day...talk about PEEING...lol.  I find that it "fills" me up and keeps me full for over an hour....I haven't found it to make me more hungry or go "carb" crazy....in fact just the opposite.    But as the others said, you should follow your surgeons protocol.
