Chewable Multi...
Your weight loss surgery program should be filling you in on this sometime soon. Where I had mine at Duke we went over calcium briefly in the pre-op group, but more in-depth at the 3 week post-op session with the nutritionist. What I was instructed to to do is at 3 weeks post op (which is when we transitioned off of low-calorie liquids and liquid protein only to soft foods) we were to start taking 1200-1500 mg of calcium citrate (not carbonate because of poor absorbtion) per day. They told us to do chewable tablets until 3 months post-op preferably split into two or three doses throughout the day rather than all at once. I found that I hated the chewable tablets because they were huge and tasted awful, I called our office and they told me it would be ok to switch to citracal creamy bites, which is actually like a chocolate candy. I have also heard of some people *****ally like something called citracal petites - both of these can be found at walmart or walgreens. I would think that you would be better off doing it this way because if you relied on getting it from your multi you would have to take six of them per day, but you don't need six times the amount of all of the other stuff in your vitamin. In any case though, you are best off asking when you have the opportunity at your surgeon's practice. Hope this helps...
First - congrats on doing the surgery! Can't wait to have another loser in the house!
Next - speak with your NUT and MD about using a MV with calcium. There is some strong evidence that shows ingesting the vitamin and calcium together decreases the post-op body's ability to absorb either of them. Some studies recommend a period of at least an hour between the vitamin and calcium. Flip side of the argument is that it doesn't make that big of a difference other than getting a lot more of some vitamins than you really need....... So...consult someone who makes a lot more money than I do for more information and follow the recommendations of your professionals.
If you're lucky, Dx will read this and send you a file of info on this topic.
Love ya, Dx.

Check out this site. There is a separate chewable calcium that works great. One bottle lasts about 2-3 months. http://va.eftsecure.net/eftcart/products.asp?M_id=1859910569 30
One thing about these calcium tablets. When it comes to yoru meds and vitamins, you actually look forward to these calcium tablets because they taste pretty good and are one of the sweetest things you get to have in the first couple of months. So you look forward to taking the Calcium.
While there, I woluld also recommend getting the CoreOmega omega 3 ( I like the plain orange the best). This is a great way to get Omega 3s in. It actually tastes good and there is no burping up fish oil like when you take caplets.
I also take the Flinstone complete vitamins twice a day. But you can get those much cheaper at Wal-Mart.
I have no idea if the prices here on the calcium and coreomega are the best on the web. I wasn't all that price sensitive since these were far cheaper than meds I was on pre-op. No vested interest on my part here. This is something affiliated with our Surgeon's office so I trusted it.
One more I would suggest is the chewable iron. I started taking that at about 3 months and that really helped my energy level.
Just had my 6 month labs. Everything was terrific. I went from being diabetic to non-diabetic in 5 weeks. My 6 month non-fasting blood sugar was 82. I haven't seen that number that good ever. The first time I had my blood sugar tested before being diabetic it was 110. That was 10 years ago. So to be off all meds and to be well in the normal range is nothing short of miraculous for me.
All the best. We're saving space for you on the loser's bench.

I’m a bad example when it comes to this, maybe… I use a "Fortify" Multi-Vitamin that is not intended as a chewable, But I chew it up all the same. It’s a big-ole horse pill Multi that tastes fairly nasty, But, I didn’t choose it for the taste, just the Vitamins. A little swig of water or SF lemonade, and the taste is very quickly gone. I also take my Calcium Citrate as a separate pill. Citracal® Caplets + D (630mg) I also chew those and there is No flavor what so ever. I eat cottage cheese and/or dairy each day as well. So far right at 4 years post-op? Perfect labs still. (Your Mileage may Vary) [I’ll look for my Calcium post from the past…probably *above in thread by now} Best Wishes- Dx
My surgeon has me on a minimumof 16 oz of skim milk per day for both protein and calcium. In addition he put me on Flinstone complete chewables (2 per day). So far this seems to be meeting the requirements for calcium and everything else except B12 and iron. I take a liquid B12 complex and 2 iron tablets a day.
