Months Wasted!
Wow. I wasted months of my post-op time on a plateau of bouncing between minus 170 and minus 175 pounds.
I'm one of those most unfortunately people who do not dump. No matter how much sugar I have, I can not and will not dump. My doc told me not to drink any drinks with sugars in them (orange juice, alcohol, etc), but he said if I can handle it, sugar in solid form wouldn't hurt me too bad if I kept my calorie count low.
However, my body said "Nay nay!"
Just about every day, I would have a small sugary snack, giving in to my craving. Yeah, I know, but if it wasn't for appetite and cravings, I wouldn't have needed the surgery in the first place. So, for about the past six months, I have been on a plateau.
It depressed me a bit, but not too much, since at minus 173 pounds, I was able to move around without any pain and do most of what I used to do, such as going for long walks, mowing my own grass, etc.
On Monday night, I decided to completely lay off the sugar. I still ate how I have been eating, several times a day, eating non-sugar carbs with my food, etc. I figured it wouldn't matter much, as unless I went all out Atkins, the scale just wasn't going to move again. So, Tuesday, I didn't eat any sugar.
Lo and behold, Wednesday morning, I had dropped four pounds. The plateau from hell had been shattered!!! No sugar again on Wednesday. Got on the scale this morning, and I've dropped another three pounds! I've broken the 180 mark!!!
Morale of the story: Dumping is a BLESSING!!! If you don't dump, stay off the sugar. PERIOD!
It is good to be back in the game.

Hey Jim....
I know I'm a big beliver in Ketosis....When I'm in Ketosis, and I hit the cardio, I will drop like a stone..
2 years out and I ate 4 bite of tiramusu, from the cheescake factory...I dumped so bad I went fetal....
It was a sad display, but 2 years out, my tool still works..
Bests of luck and congrats on moving again...
go kick some adkins aZZ
Russ
Thanks, all.
I'm fortunate in that "white" carbs don't bother me too much. On my days off of sugar, I've had white bread and sushi with rice with no problems. I'm fortunate that I don't have to go on an Atkins diet. With the effects that would have on my mood, it would really make me want to go running through the night with a butcher knife.
I've wondered how sugars would effect me. So far I've managed to avoid them the last 6 weeks or so. However, Memorial day, we're having a big 40th birthday party for my little sis. My wife is making the cake, and my sister-in-law is making her carmel apple pie (the best in the world IMHO)- not to mention the adult beverages that will be in abundance. So my first real test is staring me right in the face.
I'm hoping I have the strength to avoid them all. If not, I hope I dump like a big dawg.
Thanks for sharing. It's a good lesson for me. Sorry I had to learn it at your expense.

Jim,
Great job on your loss so far and for not being content to stop after a 6 month stall. Most inspiring to encourage us to evaluate and re-evaluate where we are anad where we want to be. I am frustrated myself as I am on my 4th plateau since January and even put on 4 lbs. After dropping to 246, I am hovering at 248-250 the last two weeks. It has really caused be concern and to review my intake also. I still have the goal of getting to 180 after losing 162 to-date, so I still have 66 lbs to go after I can bust past 246 again.
Thanks for sharing your revelation and your honesty with self. Your enduring and self management are motivating to me.

Hi Jim,
Wow good to see you again! You haven't been here for a while. Would have sent off a search party, but we have so many guys here, I can't keep 'em all straight. (that's not a sexual preference joke, guys! Take the phrase at face value! lol!).
You're right, you can always lose, just cut the carbs and exercise. Once you reach your goal weight, for some guys like me then it becomes an issue of how to lose more bodyfat and not lose more muscle. In addition to the weights and instead of long, slow cardio I've been doing trackwork and stationary bike sprints, which just burns the fat away.
Anyway, glad you're feeling back on track and losing too.
Great to see you again,
Dave
