Armstrong doesn't have to use steroids or pack his red blood cells. The man is a true freak of nature. Have you seen the Discovery documentary on him "The Science of Lance Armstrong"? It is amazing.
They do all kinds of physiological test on him and compare them to that of "normal" people and other world class athletes. His scores on virtually every test, from oxygen transport, lactic Acid production and transport and other physiological issues are literally off the charts in many areas, and superior in nearly every category to almost all the other athletes they have ever tested.
It is a great documentary. They also go into the science on the design of everything from the different bikes, helmets and even the clothes he wears while riding to get the best aerodynamics.

Armstrong is a true wonder of the world! (like that other guitar playing Texan named Eric Johnson!). The most bizarre thing that I read about Armstrong was that he was able to convert one type of muscle cell to another (either fast twitch to slow twitch or vice-versa) through training - previously unheard of!
Also heard that Chemo had virtually no noticeable efffect on him. What an amazing guy!
Best part though, was probably having Sheryl Crow there to service him on the tour!
