OT: Leg Cramp? Or is it something else?

I've been having a problem with my right leg upper thigh the last couple of months.  All of a sudden the muscle right above the knee will tighten up and feel like it's on fire.  It doesn't feel like an ordinary cramp because this burning is a completely different feeling then normal cramps.  It normally only happens also when I go to bed at night and get horizontal.  Wierd huh?  Didn't know if I might be pressing some nerve that causes this. Just wondering if anyone else has had this before or if's just another "old fart" symptom. Bobby

Bobby,

Not sure about the burning part, but I did have some cramping in the bottom of my feet and in my shins right after a recent internal hernia surgery. Just assumed that it was deyhydration from a sluggish digestive system. That's the only thing that comes to mind. Maybe the other guys have something, but definitely sounds like something to check out with the doc.

Upper leg pain is often sciatica caused by a back problem.

Didn't know that...interesting...Hence the burning? I always picture sciatica as being on the outside of the legs...guess not!

Many thanks!  That sounds in line with the back issues I've been having the last couple of months.  Dr had said I probably had a herniated disk.  Hmmm, can't take aspirin or Advil.  I'll check with the doc.  Till I get in, I'll sacrifice a bucket of KFC like the guy in the movie, "Major League." Thanks again! Bobby

Bobby, Even mild dehydration will cause such symptoms. If you were ‘further out’ I’d ask about your b-12… Your B-12? :haha: That’s also a big symptom associated with the onset of neuropathy from B-12 deficiency. Could be lowered potassium level as well… banana in a protein shake yet?

Actually, everyone says- "bananas for potassium" but tomato sauce, avocados, have much higher potassium per ounce. Drink up, and check with the doc….

WAIT—

May 9th surgery? This may 9th?

So soon? A lot of folks have a temporary set of neuropathy-like symptoms very early on after surgery. Not just WLS but all types. It’s that hard little board of an OR table. It presses on a nerve ganglia and causes numbness or pain in the thighs for several weeks after surgery. The longer you were "on the table" the more likely you’ll have the symptoms. Also mostly effects overweight folk. I had it…doesn’t feel like a normal cramp…sort of the way a foot feels when waking up after it’s "fallen asleep?" Likely to be the Operating Room table compression on your lower back. Do ask the doc….. I’m putting a 2$ bet on the O.R. Table to "Place or Show." Best Wishes- Dx

Hey Dave!! I’m busy as the infamous- "One Legged Man in the Azz-Kickin’ Contest!!" Just got back from Texas (nephew’s wedding) and getting ready to head back to Atlanta then Boston, then Portland….. Somewhere in all of this I’m gonna squeeze in a quick Summer Session of teaching one class! I thought I’d have access to a ‘puter’ this last weekend, but the internet at my Dad’s place was down. L I missed the Sunday Weigh-in for the first time in quite a while… Oh well, back and at ‘em! Glad to see you Over There! That site loads fast and I pop by about as often as any. Just keeping up with Old-Friends from the net…. Hope all is going well for you! Best Wishes- Dx
