Hello All, I just wanted to make a point about your individual workout schedules and routines. I met a guy in the gym, and we decided that we would workout together. We had similar work schedules, and since I met him in the gym I figured he would be dependable. Now, 5 months later, I have seen him in there probably 2 times. I happened to run into him yesterday, and we made plans to meet up at the gym today.  He never showed up. And I remembered NOT going to workout, because HE was a last minute cancel.  The moral of this is,,,,,, dont let ANYBODY have any impact on what YOU know YOU are supposed to be doing.  Take YOUR ass to workout.  Steve Que

It's true. You have to be able to get it done on your own. Others don't show up or work out at a different intensity or whatever. I've started working out with a partner twice a week now, but I get the basics in before he shows up, just in case he doesn't.

There's only 3 I will train with.  Me, Myself and IPOD!    I know exactly what it is I need to do...depending on how I feel a particular day, I can set the pace myself and not have to worry about eithering carrying or falling behind someone else.  I've just learned it works better that way.   Some people do better with the workout buddy for motivation and accountability...not me though thank goodness. I will workout with others, but not during a time that I've set aside for my specific needs...I always do it separately precisely because of the issues you brought up. i could write a whole book about that subject. when i last worked out a gym it was a serious free weight gym in LA where we had guys going after Mr. America and Mr. Universe and all the local Cal titles. I used to work part time in the gym as well because I knew the owner. So I was always in demand as a partner because I work out hard and fast. That's how the pro's do it. Now I had a friend across town who was a nautilus trainer. Of course I hung out there for the women! Everybody over there was into hanging out and socializing. not serious!

Back in the free weight gym there were some talkers but i think it depends on the gym. a serious gym has committed people who wouldn't miss a workout if their life depended on it. My observation is that the more a gym has machines and fitness classes and a pool, the less likely you'll have serious partners. I know that's a sweeping statement but I've been brought up in gyms. my mom owned one when i was a little kid and i've been in them since.

when i trained with a partner it was always in prep for a contest and would last only a month or two tops. i hate counting on people when my workout is so important to me. i hate waiting even one minute when i'm psyched and ready to roll. you know, when you're hitting serious weights you have to get your head around pain, low energy, whatever the day has brought and be ready to blast through all the negatives. in another words, who can you think of who is as dedicated as you and serious as a heart attack about your workouts? usually nobody, so learn to train yourself and get a spot if you're lifting heavy. end of story. I work out at home and have a cage with catch bars for heavy lifting. i also have a two station machine and enough equipment to give me everything i need. so no more gyms or partners for me.....carbonblob

Carbon, sounds like youre a serious workout guy. And most people in these rooms have had problems GETTING to the gym. I was pointing this out about workout partners so THEY wouldnt have another excuse not to go. I see your point though. And I agree. Back in my college days, I was one who lifted for the amount of weight, not for bodybuilding. So I can identify with what you are saying. Thanks for your reply. Steve Que

ah ha! i seemed to miss that message! by all means guys, get to the gym. i was just ranting on past experiences. i've said this a hundred times on this site. my doc told me the only patients who lose 100% of their excess weight are those who get "religion". by that he meant those who play by the rules. eat right, work out, drink water, blah blah. simple rules but man are they tough to live by. still, exercise can make up for a lot of faults or stumbles along the way.

a lot of the guys here have also said that a key to success is to find something you truly like and will stick with. that's why there's there are guys here who hike, bike, tri athletes, runners, swimmers you name it. the fact is, a pound of muslce burns a lot more calories than a pound of fat so it keeps your matabolisim high all day long burning calories. speaking of which, i can't wait to start swimming again this summer! good luck to all......carbonblob
