Site for Researching Training Supplements

Hey Guys,

This site I found seems to have a lot of sound articles on sports supplements:

 http://www.pponline.co.uk

For example, I found the following info on Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's) and L-Glutamine, both substances which are said to decrease muscle breakdown during resistance training or increase Growth Hormone (GH):

On BCAA's:

http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0391.htm

"In previous studies carried out over the last year or so, BCAA supplementation has been linked with better immune-system functioning and superior preservation of muscle mass in athletes undergoing heavy training."

On Glutamine:

http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/human-growth-hormone.html

"A suggested exercise and dietary strategy for optimising human growth hormone (hGH) secretion is as follows:

  • Exercise – three sessions per week, each involving at least 10 minutes’ work above lactate threshold or a number of sprints, with a 1:3 work-rest ratio;
  • Before exercise – no fat for 60 minutes before, 2g glutamine 60-90 minutes before;
  • During exercise – plenty of plain water (ie 200 ml every 10-15 minutes if training in 18-21°C);
  • After exercise – avoid sugar for two hours post exercise but take 25g protein immediately afterwards in the form of either a protein shake, protein bar, lean meat or eggs (although you should limit your consumption of eggs to avoid too much cholesterol)."

I had been taking the above two supps and about two months later, a training partner asked me if I was taking steroids. This inspired me to search the web to find out which of my supplements might make me grow that naturally. That's how I found the links and information above.

Just Thought I'd Pass that on,

Dave

Cool site Dave, thanks

My pleasure, John! It may be a little specialized for some and a lot of people don't want to be bothered with supplements. But since muscle loss is a big issue with any kind of weight loss, I thought those two might be relevant. That's why I tossed them in.

So, are you still doing martial arts?

Best Wishes,

Dave

No karate, just weight training, and biking. Just getting back into it, 2 1/2 months post op from extended abdominoplasty, it feels good to be back to the gym. I do use glutimine, isopure protein, cq10, and I was using creatine, but stopped during my recovery. Ive been at my goal weight for some time now and believe adding muscle is a big part of long term success for me. Always enjoy reading your posts, so keep'em coming

Thanks, John. I usually just post whatever I happen to be checking out at the time. So, have you noticed any effects from the Glutamine or CoQ10? Glutamine not only seems to be helping with muscle growth, I seem to feel better mentally with that. Then with CoQ10 I seem to have much more workout energy and get less sore. Unfortunately, it is one of the expensive ones. Can you believe it's 3-5 times more expensive here in Japan. I always buy both net order from the US.

Great to Hear from You,

Dave
