General Sickness & the Pouch

Just wondering guys how the pouch functions with general sickness, such as I'm coming off 4 days having severe strep throat - been on protein shakes and water to not dehydrate.  After trying to cure myself, I went to the doctor and she gave me a shot of pencillin and a script for Vicodin 500mg, the pain of the throat caused me to have 4 sleepless night, the vicodin didn't even touch it.   I was wondering, when the coughing, phlegm and rest starts going - does having a pouch make it worse?   Thanks, Bob.

Bob,
I wish I could help you, but, I have not even had so much as a throat tickle since my WLS 15 months ago!
Pre-op, I would get the flu, colds, bronchitis, etc... CONSTANTLY.
Now?
Zip. Zero. Zilch. Goose Egg.
Don't know if this type of thing has held true for all of the Post-ops, but, I wish you and everyone else the same good fortune!

Be Well,
A.J.

Sorry Bob,

Had a problem with leg numbness last October and that was about it over the past 18 months. I don't get sick very often, good Scottish genes in my family. I did drop a ratchet on the bridge of my nose last night that hurt like hell and it left a nice cut for me to show the world.

When I was around 220 and active, I don't ever remember getting this sick so often.  I never figured it was because of my active lifestyle - I just figure I have to shake everyone's hand as a sign of greeting, and I have these rugrats that bring home surprises from school.  So, hopefully for me it will swing back to being less sick the better shape I get into.

I'm the same way, no sickness in terms of colds or viruses whatsoever, in spite of living in a high snowfall area and going out for at least 60 snow jogs and lots of trips to the pool. When I lost weight on my own, it was always trying to come back and I would get feverish a lot (this was when I was a young wussy 15 years ago).

Phlegm can make you feel full, because it takes up a lot of room in the pouch.

Bob - I am so sorry that you have been sick!  That's dreadful - and of course, I hope you feel much better very quickly! :) I know that when I have been ill (surgery almost 3.5 years ago), I saw no real difference in effects from the actual illness, or with antibiotics, on my pouch.  This seemed to progress and get better as normal without any real differences.  Just get plenty of rest and get back on your feet! :) I hope you feel MUCH better fast! Take care, Mike

Bob, Hope you’re feeling better…. It’s odd. I have had the same ‘luck’ as A.J. Prior to WLS I would have bronchitis and sore throat/sinus infection very often! About 3 to 5 times a year. Usually needing antibiotics. Since WLS? In right at 4 years, 2 Colds. (not Flu, just minor colds) No respiratory infections at all. I also had my spleen removed which should make me more compromised Due to lowered immunity. I have no idea as to why the anomaly. Early on post-op, I did have to take a big course of antibiotics To the extent that they screwed up my balance of digestive bacteria And I had to take Flagyl to get everything back in line. Since then? Nothing….Fit as a fiddle. Perhaps the extra exercise and general health improvements over all? Back when I did take the antibiotics, they seemed to absorb and work just fine. (I’m interested to see how others have experienced Colds/Flu since WLS…) Best Wishes- Dx

At 4-5 weeks out I had a stricture that prevented solids but allowed liquids through slowly.  I also had some mild seasonal allergies, and I never before realized how much phlegm they produced that was just running down my throat unnoticed.  Things backed up, and I was having to spit up every few  minutes for hours (not exactly throwing up, just kind of rolling it up my throat), even if I hadn't drank (much less tried to eat) in a while.  It was thick and gross and the volume was astounding, over a cup an hour. My point is, when things are tighter, say in the first 5-10 weeks, I imagine having a lot of congestion could be a real hassle, even if you didn't have a stricture.  Now, stricture repaired and pouch otherwise pretty healed, I don't think it would be a big deal, except maybe after solid meals that filled your pouch. As for just coughing because, say, you have a cold, I don't think the pouch matters.  I sometimes cough in the mornings when I brush my teeth (overactive gag reflex), and I can't tell any difference at all, other than it hurting a little in week 1.
