Over 400 lbs and having laprospoic gastric bypass surgery
479 big ones at my initial consult but was probably closer to 500 a couple months prior. Had lap RNY on July 25, 2005 and things have gone pretty much perfectly. Had a minor bout with gout ( poet and didn't know it) and a gallbladder attack or two but minor stuff really. I've been maintaining between 210 and 215 for a year now which is my optimal weight at a tad under 6'5".
WLS is a miracle if we take advantage of it by changing our bad eating habits (all about nutrition) and we exercise. Some risks to be sure but the potential payback is awesome.
Best of luck.

Slightly below the 400 pound mark at the time of surgery...lost some weight right before surgery. Like the others, made it through with flying colors and no complications. Starting weight at consult was 419 and I'm at 174 today. 25 months post-op this past week.
Take a look at the profiles of the folks that reply to your question as well as others here in the Locker Room...you'll find that you're not alone.
Keep the questions coming! Best wishes!

469 at consult and 439 on day of Lap-RNY. October 23, 2006
I'm 6 months out and things are going great. I'm 310 today. No surgical complications, but did have some troubles with constipation for a couple weeks. The surgery went fine. Some docs are not comfortable doing laproscopic on big guys, others have had great success with it. Best of luck my friend.
The issue with being over 400 lbs isn't necessarily the deciding factor for having a Lap surgery. Some surgeons have cut off weights, i.e. if you weigh over 400 lbs you have to have an open surgery; on the other hand, other surgeons base it on the type of surgery and your individual body shape.
My surgeon (Dr. Roslin) in manhattan told me he had performed Lap surgeries on people that were bigger then me (i was 492 at my consultation). The issue at that size is the type of surgery, and if the angle of my insides would accomidate the lap tools, I carried a lot of weight in my stomach, and he wouldn't know if there was enough "bend" in the lap tools to do a lap surgery until he was already in me. With that said, I chose to have the DS in a 1 stage surgery. If I chose to have it in a 2 stage surgery, I could have had it done Lap....but because I wanted it all done at once, it meant having an open surgery, because at my size Dr. Roslin wanted to keep me under the shortest amount of time as possible, and doing an open surgery is much quicker. Even with that, I was in the OR over 3 hours (as far as I can tell).
I didn't have the RNY or a Lap surgery...but I'm doing great in case you were still wondering ....i'm down to 215 from 492 a year ago.

I was 443 when I went for my preop visit 3 days before surgery, lost about 13 lbs in 3 days so the morning of my surgery I weighed in at 430 my doctor generally doesn't like to do lap on people with a BMI > 60 but he said I was okay put me on blood thinners he was largely afraid of clots but other than that he said I was good to go. I have a few extra holes for two drainage tubes and a G-tube, other than that no major scars just some small ones. You can read my profile if you want more info about the surgery or the hospital stay, because I did have a few complications.
