OT: Am I nuts?

Well ultimately the shrink will decide this at the psych evaluation but I have another question, maybe you guys can help.

First off, sorry I have not been around all that much lately, we have a new edition to the family (baby girl) and she takes up a great deal of time.

Here’s my issue: I have recently been breaking down a big old (mostly cedar) deck and have been planning on building a screen room. Money has been increasingly tight, what with the new baby and my wife not working. I need to get rid of all of this wood and will likely need a 30 yard dumpster, which by me will run $500 easy.

Here is what I was thinking, I rent a good 6” wood chipper and go to town on all of the wood, I need the chips anyway for some landscaping areas. Am I nuts? Most of the wood is either 2x6, 5/4x6 or 4x4. There are a couple of 2x8 as well. I know it will be much cheaper to rent the chipper than to get the dumpster and the mulch. Sounds like a great idea to me but it almost sounds too easy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance (I wont be back on until tomorrow),

Chris

if the wood is cedar and there are no nails in it i would say go for it.  if there is any pressure treadted wood i would think twice or ask someone who know but the pressure treated maty harm the plants that the chips go on adam

Chris, Congratulations on the Baby Girl! Dad, you’ve got about 13 to 15 years to get that shotgun collection mounted on the wall of the entry way! J You need something for ‘perspective boy friends’ to look at when they visit. The deck disposal? Are you in the city? Or Out of town? I’m far enough of the beaten path that I’d build a bonfire or two. If it’s free of hard ware, I don’t see why it wouldn’t go through a chipper. Have a Great Summer! Best Wishes- Dx

Thanks for the advice. I would love to have a big ol' bo-fire, but on Long Island, such things are frowned upon. I had the FD at my house one time because I burnt my spare-ribs on the BBQ!!! No joke!  As far as my daughter is concerned, I have a two year old son who is already a brute and I think I will enroll him in karate ASAP!!!! I have already started planning a back story for myself. I plan on telling her potential boyfriends about my days as a cage fighter (which never actually happened).

I don't know how your town operates but you might want to call around a bit because some communities offer a chipping service for free for hardwoods...if they're untreated and unpainted.  They'll do exactly what you're thinking and use them for mulch.

I think the problem will be that there are some CCA pressure treated ones in there, but a good suggestion none the less. I will give my town a call and ask them what the say.
