Howdy Folks, I've been a lurker here on the Men's board for several months and finally decided to introduce myself and join in actively.   I have been many sizes over my life, but mostly on the fat side.  Like many of you, I have had no trouble losing weight when I put my mind to it (80 to 100 pounds at some points), but have never been successful at keeping it off for more than a few months.  The extra weight always returned and then some.   I lost a brother 3 years ago at age 48.  We don't know his cause of death as the autopsy was inconclusive, but I have a feeling it was due to a fatal arrhythmia induced by sleep apnea, as he had gained a lot of weight in the year prior to his death.   He died in his sleep.   I have been contemplating and researching WLS for a couple of years now, and finally decided for my health, I'd better bite the bullet and get it over with.  I've been pretty lucky health-wise up until now, but having just turned 40, I think my body is trying to tell me that my luck won't hold out forever.   I have a couple of siblings who have undergone RNY within the last couple of years.  After much research, I feel RNY is the route to go for myself as well.  I have all my preoperative consults, tests, and procedures out of the way and am scheduled for the surgery on May 21.  My friends keep asking me if I am nervous about it, but I am actually looking forward to it and the changes that will follow.   I've enjoyed reading everyone's posts over the last few months and feel like I know a lot of you already.  I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences and wisdom.  You don't often see the level of support you guys give on other groups.   Wish me luck!! Best Regards, Tim Highest weight:  328 Weight at initial Dr. visit:  328 Current weight:  312

Welcome. Like you, it was a family member's health that motivated me, seven years ago.  We were fortunate; at just 53, my mother survived a massive heart attack and emergency quadruple bypass surgery.  I lost over 100 pounds in response, but gained it back plus 50.  So, again like you, I knew I had to do something to make sure the next loss was permanent.  I pursued WLS for several years, but kept experiencing delays.  Early this year, my brother (who is only 36 and borderline overweight/obese) had a bad EKG (thankfully later tests found no problems).  That was it for me; I made a point to hassle at least one person every day for two weeks (insurance, doctors, labs), and was on the operating table within a month. You are right not to be nervous.  Regardless of how well it goes, you've made the best decision.  And as you can see from looking around here, it usually goes very well for people that tackle it with motivation and knowledge.  Hope you continue to find a lot of both here.

Tim, welcome to the group!  The guys here are great, the advice is free, none of the soap opera @rap from the main boards.   Take care! Bobby

Welcome aboard.  Save a seat for me on the bench as I hope to have a surgery date pretty soon.  I meet my goal of 319 over the weekend for the doctor to finally give me a surgery date.  You will find that these guys are wonderful.

Welcome Tim to the men's forum.  Great group of guys here.  They sure have helped me tremendously!  I too was excited about the surgery.  I was sooo tired of losing then only to gain the loss and usally more weight.  After the surgery, I now look as food as an energy source.  Some good, some not so good.  That mental change has helped tons.  Good luck with your surgery and keep us posted. Hi Tim, and welcome. Sounds like you're making a wise decision, especially with the family history of obesity. Choosing WLS is big decision, but once you know it's right for you, the relief seems to grow day by day--even before surgery. Keep us posted and good luck May 21.

Doug
