OMG; Ga**** 3 bucks a gallon here...
It's true, Bob! Not sure why it's happening. I'm almost certain that hyrogen and electric cars would sell in the US if the price were right. It's certainly not that the Japanese people are pushing their government to promote alternative fuel cars. But, there's certainly little if any oil to be found in or near Japan. Might we have found the connection? lol
Hmm...think any politicians might have a hand in keeping oil, or at least the entrenched ethanol flowing? Hehe...

Consider yourself lucky. Our ga**** $ 107.9 per liter here in Canada on Wednesday. That converts to $ 431.6 per US Gallon. Since then, it has come down to 102.5/l which still converts to 410/US Gal.
I agree that we all need to look at how we get around. I bought a bicycle for the first time in 30 yrs. and now am biking back and forth to work. Trying to save whereever I can.

Hey Dale,
I'm really surprised that the US oil companies are not selling to us by the liter. It would throw the American consumer off for a long time. They could continue to raise prices and the only shock would be when they seen the credit card bill for it. 4.31 per gallon is absurd for gasoline. Right now gas is 2.85 per gallon here in McKinney, and that's way too freakin' high in my book. My truck is a two tanker, used to cost 32. to fill up both tanks, which is about 30 gallons, now it cost 90. bucks! I haven't completely filled both tanks in years.
About 33% of our gas comes from the middle east, aren't we occupying Iraq right now. Last I heard, gas is about .25 cents per gallon there. WOW, that's a 1140% markup. WHAT THE HELL!!!! It's no wonder the gas companies are making a 9 Billion dollar profit.
I have driven over 6000 miles in the last 30 days and will drive another 10000 in the next 6 weeks. I took a project where I am auditing 440 communication towers all over the country. I bought a new Honda Civic just for the project, as I can nearly pay for it with the gas savings over my truck. The Civic is averaging 32 MPG on the trip! Yee haw!
The highest prices I have seen were in Southern California, at about $3.50/gal. The lowest was in Kentucky or Texas, at about $2.70/gal. I'm in Ohio right now, and it is much higher that I expected, at about $3.20/gal.
At these prices, alternative fuels start to become viable. I think we will see a lot of BioDiesel production in the coming years, as it only costs about .85/gal to produce on a large scale. Shell and some of the other big boys are building biodiesel refineries in texas right now. They are going to use soy beans, grown in Texas, for the oil. Biodiesel is pretty cool, as it is a much better lubricant than fossil fuel diesel, and producing almost no pollution. I really looked into it, as I have quite a few diesel trucks in my fleet.
Right now, it is still a better value to buy a honda or toyota gas car, or VW diesel, than it is to buy a hybrid. You will never buy enough gas to make up the difference in the purchase cost, unless gas his $5.00/gal or something. Trust me, I really crunched the numbers on this. Of course, they are offering tax breaks on the hybrids which do make them more reasonable. But for now, buying a hybrid is more of a social statement than a financial one. They do not do 70MPG either. the people I have talked to with them say 50-55 is more realistic, in real usage.
I'm with you on the oil companies. there is no logic to the cost of gas right now. ExxonMobile made around 9Billion profit last quarter alone. We are being raped, but that's what we get for putting Bush/Cheney in there. This administration has , without doubt, been the "friendliest" to big business of any administration in history.
