At one time recently but not yesterday, I passed over a topic dealing with Ketosis and RNY, can someone direct me to that post or explain to me what Ketosis is and whether or not it is good or bad and what it has to do with RNY or any other WLS. Thanks, Bob M.
Hi Bob,
Wiki's looks pretty good and not too long:

Basically, sounds like using your body for energy instead of food/glucose. Using body fat for energy is what most of us are looking for, but most of us lose some muscle and bone in the process, especially without resistance training and proper protein intake.
Best Regards,
Dave
Here is some information on ketosis generally. Read this first.
You will enter ketosis in the heavy-loss period after RNY. There is almost no way to avoid it. It's not entirely bad; it means your body processes fat for energy, and is part of what suppresses appetite so much in the first few months. The bad is that the lack of carbs means your body will naturally see those expensive protein shakes you're drinking as energy, and they might not go to the intended purpose (assisting muscle growth/maintenance) as much as they would when accompanied by a 1000 calories or so of carbs. It is also rough on the kidneys after a while, but the general thinking seems to be that unless you have severe kidney function problems, stressing the kidneys while losing (and keeping off ) the weight fast does less damage to your health than staying at the high weight.
