Salsa

I'm craving salsa, which I know will be good for me and I'm sure I can handle it.  However, I don't want to tempt myself with chips.  What are some other things I can dip into salsa or mix that will be healthy and taste good? Thanks, Al

Personally, I like to put salsa on my egg(s). Depending on the salsa, Pico de Gallo for example, its good on beef or, other meats.  Post-op RNY Mrs. suggests mixing salsa w/ a little fat free sour cream and dipping veggies in it.  I, personally, make the best Pico de Gallo on the planet. But, Pace works well when I dont have the time to chop all day.  I'm a Bander but, you RNYs should check the sugars on commercial salsas.  Jeff

Jeff Any chance we can get you to post your Pico de Gallo recipe?  Sounds like good.   Dan

Our dietician told me it was OK to eat tortilla chips or pita chips as long as the fat wasn't too high - so baked over fried. I haven't tried tortilla chips yet but I have tried pita chips and done OK as long as I only eat a few like at the beginning of a meal. I have eaten them with fat free cream cheese as a meal and thrown up. I'm only five weeks out though.

Okay Michael.  I'm preop and trying to get a handle on this thing.  When you say a few like at the beginning of a meal, do you mean a few chips or a few bites and are the bites like the size of your pinkie fingernail or what.  Yah ha.

Bob, Just to give you an idea of how I have been eating at four weeks. This week I made up a batch of split pea soup with ham and a batch of chili - both homemade so I could control the fat. I have been eating one or the other for three or four of my five or six meals per day. I eat until full about every three hours. That usually means about 1/2 to 3/4 of a cup. It is crazy how far these two batches of food have gone. I have them in the fridge in three or four cup tupperware containers and I'm still not even half way through them.  Anyways with the pita chips or reduced fat cheeze-its I have found I do fine if I eat four or five of them. One at a time and I chew them up so that they are just crumbs, no sharp edges to poke my still healing pouch and anastomosis. It just seems to work a lot better if I don't feature it as the main part of my meal. If I just think of it as a "side" I do better and still get my fix of crispy stuff and carbs.

Chicken, Al. Yummy. My wife cuts up chunks of skinless chicken breasts, marinates them in salsa and then bakes them in a foil lined baking dish. That's it. No other seasonings or prep and easy clean-up. Good hot or cold. Enjoy!

Hey Al one of my favorite snacks is a really spicy salsa with low fat cottage cheese. Some times I mix it together well and other times I just give it a quick stir. I tried mild salsa first and then worked up to the spicy stuff. My favoritre store brand is Kroger Private Select Black Bean that I add a little habinero hot sauce and a dash of salt. I had a cast iron stomach before surgery and so far the only touble I have had is with eating to fast and chewing my food well enough, which I am finally getting in the habit of.  pan head

Al,

All of the above suggestions, plus-

Soy-crisps. I get these fat free soy chips in the health food section of Kroger. I can’t remember the name…. But they have very little flavor on their own. Also, sometimes I’ll have a few ‘Guilt-less Gourmet’ BlueCorn Tortilla chips, Not a lot, but more than one would imagine. The trick to any of those ‘snack foods’ is to measure out how many to have in a bowl

Rather than the Pre-loss method of eating them out of the bag

Until shockingly, they were all gone!

I mix chunky salsa with drained black beans and chopped onion So it’s more filling than just by itself.

Best Wishes- Dx
