Weight stalled

I'm trying to lose 10 lbs so I can get my surgery date.  20 lbs. before surgery.  Last two days I have hit a stall after 6 lbs. loss.   For the last two days I have remained at 323.  For breakfast I have had 2-boiled eggs and a diet coke.   For lunch 2- small new McDonalds' grilled chicken wraps (and I mean small) and a diet coke.  For supper I had  scrambled eggs with chili on top, later that evening I had a sugra free popsicle then 3 pieces of sliced cheese.   I'm also getting my 64oz of water in daily.  Ok, not the best diet.  Probably, before I saw the surgeon I wa****ting 2-3,000 calories a day and no****ching any fat content.   Do I need to go straight to a liquid diet?  Any info on protein drinks would be helpful, any good tasting ones out there?    Thanks for your comments Mike

The first weight you loose is water and it goes fairly quickly. There is something like 3000 calories in a # (trying hard to remember what the number is) and you need to eat 3000 calories less than your basic metabolic rate over a period of time to loose that pound. There is mostly fat in cheese and a lot of sodium in diet coke and probably lots of carbs in the chicken wraps. Look at the labels on EVERYTHING YOU EAT and go to Fitday.com to keep track of what you are eating. You can buy the program for something like $30 and it is well worth the price. The sodium in the diet coke will cause you to hold on to the water (there is a TON of it in there) I would recommend switching to crystal light and water, you will need to switch anyway  if you are doing the R-N-Y, you might as well get a start on it. One cup of chili con carne has 256 calories (74 from fat), 22g carbs, and 25g protein and 1007mg of salt (nearly 42% of your daily total) one slice of American processed cheese has 79 calories (58 from fat) 4g of saturated fat (21% of your daily total) 0 carbs and 5g of protein. Things add up quickly huh?

Get it hot, hit it HARD,
Hammering away the pounds!

Boy,...good post there Cal. Soda gotta go....soduim, carbonation.  I know,..I was a Diet Coke-a-holic before WLS.  Gave it up and ice cream.  7 months out and I ve had a couple of swallows 3 or 4 times.  The magic is gone. Water is better. The liver shrinking preop diet many of us are required to go on is really good for dropping 15-20 pounds in 2 weeks.  Mine when someting like: breakfast:  Slimfast Optima/High Protein and a piece of fruit (usulaly an apple or banana) mid morning snack: 1 protein bar and 1 or 2 16 oz bottle waters Lunch: Slimfast and fruit afternoon snack: protein bar and 1 or 2 16oz bottle waters Dinner: 4-6 oz of lean white meat and all the raw or steamed vegetables desired (I did mostly fish/shrimp, scallops, flounder; nothing fried, all baked/grilled/boiled with steamed broccoli),...its only two weeks. evening snack: bottle water I was on it 13 days before surgery and dropped 14 pounds.  Many out here on the Men's Board did as well or better. You can do this but you gotta submitt thatyou are in surgery preparation mode and entery the relearning/retraining yourself to eat to minimze risk and for the rest of your life.  It is easier after surgery because the physical hunger will be gone and the new pouch will guide you, if you eat slow enough to listen. You can do this. We did it and you can too.  It goes by soooo fast. Really.  Just make up your mind to do it and then say,..I can't eat that right now.

Thanks for the New Diet...   Wow, and it's Friday that really looks good for the weekend.  Just kidding (or crying).  I appreciate you listing it.  I'll start on it this afternoon.    Any suggestions on good protein bars?   Also, you might know the answer to this.   Can I include something like "Crystal Light" as part of my 64oz of water daily or is that in addition too?   Also, what about tea? Can I add some pink or blue (I forgot the names) sweetner? Thanks again, Mike

Protein Bars I really like are the: BRAND                      FLAVOR Pure Protein              Chocolate Deluxe 1.76 oz bar, 170 calories, 40 from fat, 20g protein, 0g sugar, 7g sugar alcohol Pure Protein              Smores 1.76 oz bar, 190 calories, 45 from fat, 20g protein, 1g sugar, 9g sugar alcohol BALANCE GOLD       Triple Chocloate Chaos 1.76 oz bar, 210 Calories, 60 from fat, 13g protein, 16g sugar, lots of vitamins and minerals I get mine from Walmart. Crystal light is fine, I also drink SObe ELan , Sobe Life Water, Glaceau Vitamin Water, in addition to regular bottle water.  Some drink Tea with artifical sweetner, others say hold off till like 2-3 months after surgery due to acid or somethng.  Don't know, I don't drink tea or coffee. i also had open RNY, which I wanted because my surgeon prefered open to lap because he 1) takes the gallbadder during the surgery, 2) takes a liver bioposy, 3) does three tests to check for leaks in the pouch and intestianlincisions of the procedure (to eliminate the number 1 cause of compllications before he closes you up).  That was all a good idea in my book, so that is what I had,...and my insurance required my gall bladder be removed at the same time (Aetna). I was back at work in 4 weeks.

Mike, best thing to do is the South Beach induction diet.  That is basically what the post-op diet is anyway so you would get a feel for the diet.  Switch to 2% chees only, cut out all fast food.   The wraps alone - each one likely has more carbs than a Snicker's bar.

Mike, I agree with the rest of the guys that following the pre-op diet would be a good idea. I know it is really hard because I did it myself, but following the diet allowed me to lose 11 pounds in seven days.  Let's face it, it's hard because we all love food, so the challenge is mostly mental. For me I was able to stay focused because I had a very specific goal which was to shrink my liver enough so that I wouldn't wake up from surgery to learn that I would have to recover from open surgery instead of laproscopic. That was important to me. Just like achieving your goal of getting a surgery date is important to YOU. That has to be your motivation, I think you should remember that when you are making your choices. If you feel like you don't have enough information to make good choices than you can always count on the guys here to answer your questions, or the dietician at your surgeon's office. It isn't just mental though, it is physical too. There is no better time than right now to start making one of the most important lifestyle changes that you will need to make. That is to start an exercise program. Starting now will not only supercharge your weight loss but it will give you a distraction to help avoid boredom eating and more importantly I think it will give you momentum to help stay on track everyday. I know that on days I have exercised I am far less likely to slip up and eat the wrong foods because I don't want to "waste" the effort of the workout. You can start slow and build-up. walkfromobesity.org has a training schedule that can get just about anyone walking up to 3 miles within 10 weeks. It starts with just 1/4 mile that is just one lap around a track. Imagine being able to walk 3 miles BEFORE your surgery, how awesome would that be?!!!  Good Luck!

Thanks for the reply.  You guys are really wonderful.  I haven't seen the dietician yet as I'm still about a week from getting the surgery date.   So all the information yau'll are giving me is really helpful. I have only one bad thing to look forward to...  I have to have the open surgery.  My doctor (VA Hospital) doesn't do the Laproscopic.   Curious if anyone else had had to have the open surgery?   Anyway, I know I will be laid up in the hospital for at least 5 days recovering.   I'll drop the diet cokes and start on the pre-op this afternoon.    Maybe, by Monday I'll beable to call the doctor for the surgery date.  If not, maybe Tuesday.... hahaha. Mike, I agree with Cal.  Start using FitDay.com.  We didn't buy the whole program but just used the free part and it helped immensely.  We used it the first six months faithfully.  The doctor loved it too because when we had an appointment we could log onto his computer and he could see exactly what we were consuming as far as food, calories, protein, fat, carbs, etc.  It's a great tool.   Good luck.
