Hair Loss; I'm concerned
I'm 35, have never had hair loss and there is no one in my family with thinning hair. I am 6 month post op and for the past couple of weeks I have been finding a lot of my own hair falling out in the shower.
Did this happen to any of you?
Could it be surgery related?
Is it permanent?
Will the stuff that fell out ever grow back?
And what can I do?
Thanks in advance.
Scott
Scott -
It just depends on the person. I myself had hair loss. My surgeon stated out of all the men he has performed RNY on, only 6 have had major loss. I was one of them. I just kept doing what the program required with eating/protien as directed. It grows back to the way it was before surgery. I would say by 7 months you will notice re-grow and then back to normal. Some people have home remedies or shampoo that might help but I just waited it out.

You know, I'm having the same situation at 7 months. CNP at surgeon office says protein intake slows to eliminates the problem but I think I'm getting plenty. Maybe I need to re-evaluate the type and whether its natural or process/synthetic protein,.....hmmmmm (protein bars versus powders/liquids versus food such as fish and chicken that still amke me barf). I don't know.
Anyways, she assured me that it is almost always temporary and will grow back. Just another phase through which we must pass. Of course the more we ignore it and don't ensure our diet and supplements are correct, the more we will lose and the more we lose the long it will take to recover. So short of shaving my head and avoid the rush to baldness, I'm guessing this too shall pass and i'll get over it whenever it happens.
Handsome guy like you shouldn't have to worry about such matters. Just don't forget important birthdays and anniversaries and you should live long and prosper.
A Randy Travis favorite song of mine "Forever and Ever Amen" says:
Times take its toll on a body,
Makes a young girls brown hair turn grey.
But Honey I don't care, I ain't in love with your hair,
If it all fell out, I'd love you anyway.
You could always stop shaving and comb it up. Or we could braid our nose hair ato act as a distration from looking at teh top of our heads. Thats probably enough visiuals.
Lets see if it was enough to get Double Dee back out here to comment.
Good luck with that Scott. Meet you at the Toupee shop in a couple more weeks???
From what my WLS told me it is farly common.....he advised me to take a vitamin supliment.....Im at work and cant remember for the life of me what its called...will post it for you when I get home........my wife had the same problem after her wls and he advised her to take the vitamens and it worked for her ...so I just took them after my surgery.....my hair thined a little and now is almost back to the way it was before surgery.

Hello Scott
I lost lots of hair the first 4-8 mounths. Try adding some Biotin with everything else you are trying. It help us absorb more of the protien we digest. You can take it in pill form or there is a full days supply in one hole egg. I take the pill form from Wal-mart and have been for a while now. I just think it takes time to get through this. Yes in time it will grow back. Hang in there!

Not to worry Scott - it will grow back. What you're experiencing is only temporary (that is if your hair loss is related directly to surgery and/or anesthesia). If it's a male pattern baldness or genetic deal...not much you can do about that but the remedy to that is much the same. Rogaine is available over the counter and in a generic form too and I've heard several folks having success with it.
Personally, I supplemented with Zinc (chelated) and Biotin daily - still do - and used a Biotin shampoo and I didn't have any hair loss. Also VERY important to get in all your protein and then some...this will help as well. The biotin shampoo I used was from Nexxus - was expensive but I didn't care when I was able to avoid the hair loss. Nioxin is also a good shampoo to use as well.
Good Luck!

Hi Scott,
Our nurse told us that temporary hair loss is a real possibility of WLS.
Being rather precocious, I went ahead and lost my hair years before my surgery!
Meanwhile, try not to fret. I've been told that hair will grow back after our bodies adjust and process more nutrients.
I can't wait for my new look!

Hi Scott,
Might be surgery related, but 30's is prime hair loss time. I started using minoxidil about that age and pretty much put the brakes on it. Dying my hair now, which makes it look thicker, too. I have really fine hair, so if the area near the roots is gray, it reeally makes me look as if I have a lot less hair.
