What do you get from seeing a Dietitian?
I've just started on the journey to getting WLS, I have had the introductory meeting and also made appointments to see a psychologist and a dietitian. I understand why I have to see a psychologist before such a major life changing surgery. But I was wondering what I will get out of seeing a dietitian for at least 3 months, as per insurance requirements, before surgery.
Ok,.....thay help you understand and instruct you in the way you will need to eat for the rest of your life after your surgery. Till you the kinds of thengs that you should start to eat to set your system up for the surgery. Your new stomach will need alot of care and proper treatment after the surgery and your system will need vitamin suplements after your surgery. You will not be able to get in enough vitamins with the food you will be able to consume so you will need suplaments andf the diatician will help you in choosing the proper amounts for your system and tell you the most benificial kinds to take. Try to find one that is famillier with the type of sergery you are having.

Ok, Ok,... I know you other guys are thinking it but I'm gonna say it,....
What do you get frmm seeing a Dietician?
Drum roll,.....
A copay or bill.
There, I said it.
Unless your surgeon doesn't provide that kind of information, its a insurance requirement and do what you gotta do to get the surgery.
I got a bill. My insurance did not cover the visit with the dietician. Someone who works for the insurance company told me that they didn’t cover dieticians because they consider dietary counseling to be ineffective for weight control. My surgeon however, required it. The dietician explained how WLS was only a tool to help us change our eating habits. She also explained what I would need to eat in the first few weeks after surgery. I didn’t get a lot out of it that I hadn’t already learned elsewhere, but it only cost me $55 and I didn’t have to meet with her more than once.

I was self-pay and the only dietician I saw was in the hospital. She handed me a page of information on my post-op diet and then okay'ed me for discharge. My surgeon's office provided me with TONS of nutritional information and with the pre-op classes I was able to get all the info I've needed.

Iguess I was kind of lucky, I had my surgery through the CORI Center (Centers for Obesity Related Illness). It was kind of like a package deal....Surgen and dietitian work togeather as a team. They also hold monthly meeting with support groups (free) with Q&A sessions. Every time I go see the surgen for checkups I also have see the dietitian as well (part of the centers rules) all covered by insurance.
