Lap Band Results for Men
Has anyone seen any statistics on lap band success comparing men vs. women? I've heard anecdotally that men lose a higher percentage of weight aqnd do it quicker than the ladies.
Also. it seems all the members of the lap band forum are women and almost all the men who post here had RNY. Coincidence or do not many men get banded for some reason.
Since I first posted two weeks ago, I've passed the psych eval, had the medical consult, met with a dietician and then met with the surgeon who suggested I'd be better off with with lap band with a 36 BMI and needing to lose only 75 lbs (only??). He said he would repair the hiatal hernia at the same time.
Interesting questions. It does seem more women are banded than men and we do seem to loose more and faster!?! I would love to see a study but haven't seen one. I lost 155#'s or so in 9 months with my band which is much quicker than most. I will scour the internet for answers! :)

Hi Neal,
As I am a future bander, you are truly an inspiration. I hope to attain similar success. (Starting and current 372, personal goal of low 200's) and would be interested in any info you find related to this post.
Just as a general observation, it does seem to be that men do lose more but I have seen no hard statistics backing this up.
Banded March 23rd, 2006 I am down 140 pounds... lost some initally very quickly and then it slowed... each fill improves the loss and then it slows again.
I am down much more than most of the women that were banded in the same cluster of March 2006. Then again I had a lot more to loose then they did.
Most weight loss is easier/faster for men than women. All the weigh****chers, diet centers and other programs I was involved in over the years it was the same. I could loose the weight much faster.
My doctor has done over 800 bands, less than a quarter of them have been on men, but more than half of the men have been in the last two years...
I think there seemed to be a bias that the band was only for women at first (most of the TV and Magazine adds were aimed at and included only women). Now that bias has lessened and more primary care doctors are educating themselves to the procedure it is being recomended to patients. I had one doctor tell me that I had to have a gastic bypass or she would not see me any longer. (Well that was my last visit to her... she would not even reccommend other procedures.)
I worked for many years in surgery and especially during the late early eighties saw way too many complications and morbidity to even consider it. Tried diet after diet after diet... My father saw a program on the Band and suggeted it. I looked into it and was interested. The cost was prohibitive, but I kept looking and researching. Spoke to Many friends who are medical professionals and former coworkers. I finally was sold, after a longtime childhood schoolmate died January 2006, due to his weight issues.
I had to self pay, but glad I did. It is the bet investment I have made. Figured there was no reason to invest in a retirment program if I was going to eat myself to death...
I love my band... just wish I had found it much sooner!
