http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/men/a,messageboard/action, replies/board_id,5479/cat_id,5079/topic_id,758454/ That is the link to the last time I posted this in Feb of 06.  This is a recycled post but with a new group of guys it should work. Anyway, I think it is more genetics than habbit.  Most of my family are big and it seems like even though, we did not grow up with perfect eating habbits, we still got a raw deal with the fat gene.  What do you think. hey Scott,

a little off topic but i went back to your link and it made me realize how much i miss buckeye! we could really use him for all the guys who want to weight lift. he was a real leader in that area. anyway, i was the only fat one in the family although genetics certainly play a part in what we become. for me though, i just lost will power and gave into the dark force. hate leads to fear, fear leads to pizza. i think yoda said that or something........carbonblob

I emaied buckeye a while back and got no response.  I hope he is doing well.  I know he had some problems with other addictions.  I hope he just got bored with the board.   Love leads to pizza! Scott

Not sure about that one, Scott.  Probably a mixture of both.  In my case I was the only heavy one in my immediate family.  A few chunky ones but nobody got over 300 except me.  It's mostly my addictive personality I think in the long run.

I agree with Ken, Probably both. Both sides of my family have a history of MO, but we were also told to clean our plates at every meal. SO I don't know, its kind of the chicken or the egg thing. Is my family fat because of our habits or visa versa. Probably both :)

With me it was the chicken AND the egg!!!!!!!!!!!!   I should have just had the egg white, and let the chicken go, instead of frying him up and eating him!!!!!!!!!!! I couldn't resist being a smart-ass.........  I was adopted into a skinny, average height family - so, when they got this six nine, 547 pound baby - they were shocked!!!!!!!!!!!!!   Actually, I have an awesome, supportive family, and being adopted has never been an issue - but, I have wondered about the genetics things, for more reasons than just the obesity.  Hell, maybe my biological father is some retired NFL star with tons of money he'd like to shower on his ******* son!!!!!!!!!!!! Hmmm...hard to say. I'm going with a penny-theory on this one. Culture and Genetics are both sides of the same coin. I think certain genetic codes make us more sensitive to weight issues, but I think culture drives the bulk. If it's totally genetic, wouldn't surgery be moot point?

I was adopted, and I have a fully biological sister with whom I have contact who was also given in adoption. When we reconnected in our early twenties it was very interesting to see that we were extremely physically alike. We looked alike, we ate alike, we even both followed the same educational paths. Remember, we were raised by different families in different cities, neither of which were our biological parents. This, along with other documentation proves to me certain dispositional traits that must be genetic. However, Her family are consistant marathon runners. She grew up running, and as such was never heavy until she moved out and had a daughter. Now that she's changed her cultural mechanism to weight control by not running anymore she's gaining weight fast.

Just things to ponder.

both for me...fat family, poor food choices+ poor eating habits= where i was...my youngest brother has gone way past me probably about 400 lbs ... trying to not have my son start any bad eating habits, poor food choices, working on his exercise level...mine was always good until my late 20's to 40's...bounched back between gyms for much of those times, when i used to go, my weight was good, but then i stopped and it climbed back up...diet programs went along with those as well, real weight loss, but could never seem to continue with those either... Staying focussed, Al
