Pre-op diet suggestions?

My surgeon does not require I do a pre-op diet other than liquid only a few days prior to surgery.

I plan in being banded late June (slightly optimistic) or late August. I would like to try and lose some weight prior to the surgery as I know it will help the surgery as well as be a good kick start to my post WLS life.

Any suggestions? Please remember that I am PRE op and still eat like a pig (that’s how I got here in the first place. I typically do not “graze” all day but do over-eat during meals. I was thinking maybe I could try to replace breakfast and/or lunch with a protein shake but I am afraid I will be starving when dinner rolls around.

Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Chris

Eat a good breakfast and a good lunch and replace your dinner meal with a shake? This way you burn off your meals during the day and at night when relaxing you are getting you vitamins and nutrients. Just a thought.

I wouldn't skip meals. You'll just set yourself up for failure. Don't worry about how much food you're eating. Instead, try to up your protein to about 150 grams per day or so. Also try to lower your carbs below 20 grams per day. By lowering your carbs, you will be cutting out most foods that aren't allowed after surgery, and you will definitely lose weight. Exercise is always a good idea, too. Start walking everyday for 30-45 minutes. Do worry so much about how far. Every pound you lose now, is a pound you don't have to lose after surgery. Ronnie

all good advice Chris. maybe you could try eating 6 two or three hundred calorie meals a day and see how it feels. it will help you lose weight. i would also start an exercise program now. even if it's just walking after meals or strolling along. every little bit helps. you don't have to do some big life changing sport that kills you but just try to get a little more active by walking. you'll need to anyway so why not start now? good luck......carbonblob

Hi Chris, The guys are giving you excellent advice--as usual! Find some way of getting used to fewer carbs and more protein. And listen to carbonblob about exercise. Getting even a little bit stronger (strength-wise and cardio-wise) will reap big dividends during surgery and recovery. Don't think of your new eating plan as deprivation but as an early start on a new, better way of life. We all know it's not easy to curb the inner hunger fiend, so we're sympathetic to your current plight. But just think--you're already giving yourself a head start on your "next life." Way to go!

Paul, I sent you a message  via OH, I cannot access my personal email at the moment. Being full, IMO is the biggest part for me, as for most I imagine. Any weight I can lose during the pre-op period would be great. Thanks

Thank you all for the advice and support. I have an appointment with my PCP this Thursday afternoon, depending on how that goes, my journey will truely begin! Keep your fingers crossed, if it doesn't go well (he wont recommend the surgery) I will be looking for a new PCP, this much I can tell you!
