OK, so if you read my previous post you know I wen to the Surgeon for the initial consutation yesterday, got on the scale and when I came to (passed out after seeing how much I weigh - no, not really)  the scale had the following numbers: 372 lbs, BMI of 49.1, I am 5' 11" roughly Now I calculate my BMI using any BMI calculator and based on those numbers it is more like 52 What gives? any ideas? Could it be that the 49.1 that I saw was not the BMI? maybe body fat percentage? Thanks in advance, Chris

Hey Chris.... My guess is that they used a more specific calculation, that takes into consideration male female...most of the online calculations don;t take gender into consideration.... they guys are able to care more weight on their frames then a chick... hope this helps...if you find out different, let me know, I would be intrested Russ

Chris, what's the difference at this point anyway?  You know you're obese and meet the weight requirements for the surgery.  I'd say you may want to get interested in your BMI when you start losing a significant amount of weight.  However, I'll bet you won't even care then because you'll be feeling so much better and be able to be more active.  At that point, the only numbers that really count involve your weight:  your starting weight, your weight loss, your current weight, and possibly, your goal weight.

Good point, I (over) qualify and it's my weight that will matter to me, people will ask my how much weight I've lost, not what my starting BMI was. Thanks
