http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070412/hl_nm/obesity_gene_dc Can a "cure" be far behind? Might I be jumping the gun getting surgery now? I'd appreciate your input. DD

Sounds like a cure is on the horizon but still many years away. Even once they figure it out it will take years to get through studies and FDA approval. It is good news for our kids and grandkids, but I doubt it will help us in the near future.

GM, Good points. It would be nice to know that obesity in my family ends with my generation. DD

Hey DD, I'm not sure if you're jumping the gun or not. Who the hell knows if this is a cure for obesity or not. I do know that there is no such thing as a magic bullet. I doubt this FTO gene thing is one, either. Here's a few questions: How will this help food addiction? How does it control overeating? How does it help you lose the excess weight? I can see possibilities only if the extra FTO gene is caught early on, before obesity, to keep a person from becoming obese later in life. Just my 2 cents of worthless HOOHAA. Ronnie

Ronnie, Quit making sense. I'm less than a week from surgery and looking for an excuse not to show up. You're right though.  I'll be there Wednesday morning. Quivering and soiling myself, LOL. DD

The reality is that during our life times there may be a pill cure for obesity, and even more likely there will be an even better weight loss surgery available then the ones that are available right now.   WIth that said, I'd rather have had the DS when I did then to live another 3 years, 5 years, or 10 years...or whenever the next thing comes out.   Time passes very quickly, and 5 years of being able to walk was well worth surgery.  Scott  PS the FDA is slower then tar, by the time they approve anything it takes years and years and years even after trial tests are done.

Hey DD, Identifying a gene is awesome, but it takes forever before anything will be developed.  The gene for alchoholism was identified years ago, but there is still no medical treatment on the horizon.  Genetics is an field with amazing possibilities, but the reality is:  it is a field in it's infancy.   I totally understand the pre-op jitters, but now that I'm 4 weeks post-op, I find myself thinking, "did I really let someone go in and re-arrange my guts??????"   I'm feeling so awesome, and doing so well with my post-op eating, that the surgery seems surreal to me at times.    You'll do awesome - just keep talking about the anxiety, and you'll be on the post-op side before you know it!!!!!!!!!!   Best of luck, Chuck

So they will develop a pill which, no matter what we eat or how much, will keep us from being fat. Sounds like fool's gold to me.

They've already got a cure, back that dog out of the frig, expend more calories you take in, exercise until you drop, work like a real man, get off that couch,   excuses I've heard from skinny people. It would be great to secure that gene, but in the mean time I'm worried that I'm not going to see tomorrow. Preacher Bob
