i am looking for anyone who has had the lap-band done. I am wanting to get the rny done sometime, but my bariatric surgeon has suggested i get the lap-band done first to loose some weight. i am about 500# . i have never had any surgery in my life and i dont know what to expect and truthfully it scares me to have anything done, but i cannot go on like this i am worried i am going to have a heart attack, or die, or something major might happen to me, i am on a bipap machine, and have diabetis, control cholesterol with med., it has lately been getting harder to walk and do my work at my job. it just worries me if i might have problem with the surgery or something might happen while i am in surgery and with anesetic etc. i would really like to talk with someone how things go and what to expect and recovery etc. i go back to my bariatric surgeon 4-13-07  which is dr. stephen myers form mansfield, ohio and the hospital is riverside hospital in columbus ,ohio. thanks for anyones help. scott

If I were you I'd get a 2nd opinion.  The danger from WLS isn't necessarily what type of surgery, but it's from being put under for an hour or two.    I was 492 lbs the day of my first consultation and 472 the day of the surgery a month later, and my surgeon did a full Duodenal Switch.  The first surgeon I had gone to wanted to do the RNY on me in 2 stages, but my 2nd opinion doctor had more experience and had done full surgeries on people even larger then I was at that time.  It did turn out for the best, not only did I get the DS,  but I also had it all done in one surgery.  Scott

Hi Scott this is just my opinion I don’t know a lot about Lap-Band but it is my understanding that it is usually done on people who don’t have a great deal of weight to lose and no or few co morbidities. Or woman who may want to become pregnant at a later time. RNY people lose weight faster than lap-band but in the long hall they both can lose about the same amount of weight. Granted there less risks in having lap-band compared to RNY. Now as for me I had RNY laparoscopic on November. 14, 2006 my weight at the time of my surgery was 544 pounds. When I first started checking into weight loss surgery my weight was 631 pounds. I too had sleep apena. My Doctor told me my best option was to have the RNY. So far I have lost 132 pounds since my surgery, and I have had a few problems after surgery that were not necessarily from the RNY. Most people I have met and talked to have had a few problems with the surgery afterwards but I don’t know anyone who is sorry they had it done, including me. There are many great guys here in the locker room that I am sure will answer any questions you may have. Anything else I can do for you just give me a shout I would be more than glad to help in any way I can. By the way on Tuesday nights at 8:30 pm est we have a a little thing we call open mike night in the men’s chat room where you can ask question or just shoot the sh@#. So stop on in if you can. Good luck

I am 6'2" and was 370 on the day of my lap band surgery on 11/10- I am down just over 100 lbs in over 5 months I had the surgery on a Friday and was back to work (desk job) on Monday. I have had more issues having a root canal then i did with my LapBand. The Things that concerns me about your post is your DR want to to have a lap band and then have the gastric later on. I have never heard of such a thing---besides the expense of the 2 surgeries---what time frame is he talking about between the Lapband and the RNY Let me know what you need answered about the Lap and I will be happy to reply, chris

Yep...I'm with Chris on this one.  I've never heard, nor heard from another Locker Room mate that has had their surgeon recommend a pre-surgery-surgery.  Hmmmmmm. As for the LapBand and what to expect, no surgery is a breeze and without some risks for sure.  Yes, I believe that the band offers far less opportunities for problems, but it also is a "tool" that must be used properly, or it will be useless.  I had surgery on a Tuesday, was back to work for a bit on Thursday, then took the long weekend before going back for real.  But I owned my own business and at the time wasn't into much of a physical nature.  I'm just a bit skeptical of the suggestion still to try a band first...might be a good thing to test the waters with another program before making this decision.  Even at 500 plus, RNY or DS shouldn't be a problem surgery IF your surgeon is properly trained and well experienced. my two cents...keep shopping.

I understand exactly what your Fears are!  I had my Lap-Band done on 3/27/07  I can only tell how my experiance went.  I'm also Diabetic.  When I started my 2 week Pre-op Liquid Diet I was 341lbs.  Day of Surgery 322lbs.  Today (17 days post-op) 303lbs.  Just remember everyone is different.  I didn't experiance any Major Pain from the Surgery.  I only needed some Tylenol 3 w/codene and that was for a Headache!  I had no Gas pains, and the pain I had in my Stomach was like somebody had punched in it a few times.  It kinda felt like if you had a cold and coughed a lot to the point where the muscles in your stomach hurt.  Since Surgery I'm almost totally off my Lantus (insuline) I've cut down about 80%.  You'll be fine, it will be the best thing you'll ever do for yourself.  Just checkout your Doc's Reputation, talk to other patients that he's done the Surgery on.

Good Luck!

Lap band has been a life saver for me. I am 5"9' and was 334 BMI of just under 50 , the day of surgery and I reached goal in about 10 months - about 158 pounds so far. Like the others, I have not heard of surgery before surgery. Now I do know that there are successfull higher BMI lapbanders out there. I was borderline diabetic and had high BP and sleep apnea, all are normal now, actually low side of normal on the blood pressure and blood sugar. I was back at work 4 days post op and have never had any problems. THe hardest part was sleeping post op. I am a stomach sleeper and was too tender to sleep on my stomach for several weeks and ended up in the recliner during that time.

Phenom-success Neal!  You've got a fantastic case-study advocating for the Band there!!  I'm the kind that screwed around with their progress and slowed it down...managed to hit my 100 loss on my one year surgiversary but know that I coulda/shoulda been down into that 150 or so area myself.  Slowly getting it all back on track and very much looking forward to being able to get back to walking and bike riding now that the weather is starting to break here! I too am a belly-sleeper...can't seem to fall asleep unless I'm starting off all curled up hugging my pillow!  Those first few weeks were torture!  Even now at over a year out there are nights when it seems my port or my band is "right in the wrong spot" to get comfortable!  Keep up the good work!!
