Once again I seek the wisdom of the many here. I have my surgery date of May 15th, I have my pre-op physical on the 27th of April. My question is: did anyone have trouble getting pre-op approval because of High BS or A1c. I am concerned that my numbers are high and that I will be post poned. I am wondering if I should ask to put back on insulin for the next month, even though it causes weight gain or if I should just stay with the orals. I am currently on Avandamet (Avandia, metformin concoction) Surgeon said I will hav eto stop the Avandia pre-op. Any info is greatly appreciated. Sweet Brian

i basically quit taking my meds about 2 months before surgery, just because.... and my a1c was a little under 8, and no one said anything.  hope that helps. al

Thanks Al, I have already stopped taking my aspirin, and started all of my post op vitamins. I would think with all the vitamin B in my system I would be running hell bent for election but I am tired and lazy, maybe it's just depression waiting fo rthe big day. Brian

Ok,......8 days pre- op the nurse from my Dr. (Primary) calls and says my numbers are high 7.4....and they are not going to grant surgery. I called my WLS surgen and had him call my primary Dr.,  went back in to my primary care Dr. and spoke with him about the surgery and the benifits. He increased  the dose on the meds I was taking till post-op and autherized the surgery since the numbers would go down. Apx. a little over two monthes post op and down to 6.5. By the way I was on the same medication.
You can gain knowledge from anyone.
Keep an OPEN MIND and you will learn.

My Dr. wanted my A1C to be 8 or below. I was very worried about it because I had basicly eaten anything and everything I wanted because I figured I was getting surgery and I might as well indulge while I can. I had forgot  the test went back 3 months so I got worried . But I have done my physical and passed all the requirements (A1C included). My surgery is next week on the 18th of April. Good luck to you. Keep your BS under 200. :)       Mike

Best recommendation is to call your surgeon and find out if either your BG or A1C has to be below a certain amount preop in order to have the surgery.. Obviously, the better in control you can get just before the surgery, the less risk of infection, etc. But that can also be hard or impossible depending on what other meds you are on... Basically, if the surgeon or hospital wants certain levels, then my recommendation is to do whatever you need to do to get there; if insulin will bring you into better control and that's what they want, then it could well be the last month of needles for at least quite a while, if maybe not forever. The surgeon should understand that if you go back on the insulin, you might gain a little weight.. Personally, mine wasn't too bad just preop.. in the 7-8 range (A1C), yeah, not great, but not terrible. 3 months before that tho, was a different story, because of prednisone.. It was high 9's.. Post Op, I don't think I've had one higher than 6... and my morning BG is usually between 70 and 110, most often between 70 and 90. Best of luck... ...Nick

Brian, Wish I had more info for you….Many here obviously do. I’d say though, and I think most of the guys would agree, Get your Docs (Bariatric Surgeon and the PCP who manages your Blood Sugar levels) "In the Mix" on this. "What do you guys recommend, and can ya’ll make sure you’re on the same page?" Is an excellent Doc conversation to have with them both. Maybe even get them talking or at least faxing one another. In the meanwhile, YOU should do everything that YOU can do To optimize your health going into surgery. Low-Glycemic index diet choices, etc…. Just pretend that your doc is sitting with you measuring EVERYTHING you put in your mouth. Looks like you’re off to a Pro-Active start. Stay with it! The "Tired-Low Energy" business could be a bit of angst/depression Brought on by the stress of anticipation. Once again, just hang-on! May 15th will be here sooner than you think, And the April 27th pre-op physical, certainly will be. During these weeks running up to your date, DON’T fall into the trap of listening to that little voice in the back of your head saying- "You better eat it Now, You won’t be able to later!" From some one coming up on year 4? That’s BS! You’ll be able to eat most everything further out post-op. You’ll just fill up on it sooner! Keep thinking "Long-Term Solution to Long-Term Problem!" Getting your Docs into every bit of your Pre-Op planning is a Smart Start! Others will have the "A1c Numbers" to compare specifics, All I would reinforce is the "Mind-Set for Success" thoughts… Have the Greatest! Best Wishes- Dx
