Fed up with blockage

Hi, I'm almost two weeks Post-Op lapband and I'M HUNGRY!!! I'm supposed to be still on a liquid diet till Sunday then 2 weeks of mush. The problem is that I'm feeling really good and I'm hungry. So... I have been trying to eat some solid food :BIG mistake! I have been pucking it up for the last 3 meals, this really sucks. I'm eating and all of a sudden I know I'm blocked. It hurts mid chest, I start hiccuping, then I foam, then I have to go and make it come up. I have tried, some stuff that stayed down, and other that just won't. I heard that throwing up isn't the greatest thing for bandster, but I figure that if they let me puke it up in the emergency room every 15 min for 8 hours last week, it can't be that bad after all. Now I'm supposed to start mushy food for 2 weeks in 3 days, my question is what's defined as mushy? And what quantities should I be taking? I tried making scrambled eggs tonight and threw them up, but then I thought it probably was a quantity thing too: I did 3 eggs. I still haven't gotten the hang of dosing things. I mean, before it would have been 6 eggs with a side dish of 1lb of bacon. Now I did "only" 3 eggs with a fistfull of grated cheese in it and ended up bowing to the porcelain God once more. Yesterday, same thing over some chicken, beef, mashed potatoes and some rice. no big quantities of each, just some leftovers in the fridge. put it in a small plate and ate, then blocked and bowed to the porcelain God. Lunch today, I tried a clam chowder with the same results. So... Ok: I give up, no more solid food for a couple of days, but my wife was eating solid before that length of elapsed time. Looks like my band is much tighter than hers, and looking at her eat is also not helping me, but I can't fairly ask her to do anything about that. Basically, the whole thing sucks. I don't want to thorow up anymore, it's not my favorite thing, And I want to eat too, but that isn't going to happen right now. I don't want to eat pablum, I need suggestions on mushy food, I don't like using the blender on everything, it doesn't taste the same. HELP! Please? The lost weight makes me feel full of energy, but the lack of eating, having to crush the medecine (I already started skipping them because it tastes like **** and it's too much trouble) is starting to get to me. Thanks for listening to my rant, and Rocko BEWARE, do as the doc says or you'll pay for it. Even if you think you can handle the real meal, you won't be able to: I'm finding this out the hard way.

Regards,
Marcel

Hey Marcel  First of all you listed all the meats that give me trouble . Beef , Clams , Chicken , (  breast meat ) Im taking for granted I had a problem with all of them , shortley after my surgery .  I can eat chicken breast NOW after 15 months post opp .  Clams are the hardest for me , and I love em .

I had a lot of the same problems that you are having , the band ( is ) was very tight and gave me hell for quit a while .

The eggs should be under the heading of mushy's. You might try cooking just one egg scrambled and no cheese on for now .  I would eat anything i could get in me ( and keep in me at that point )  I would eat top rammen .i would crush the noodles up until they were almost dust and cook they until they were mushy.  I new that it wasent the most healthy thing to be eating , BUT I need somthing in me and I needed it bad and I was willing to try anything at that point . It will be a time of trial and error for you as you learn what you can eat and what will have to take a back seat for a while .  ( Side note )   I still cant eat MUSHROOMS  and I love em all kinds . for some reason  I just cant eat them any more . Beef is still very hard for me too . The beef has to be reallllll tender and i have to chew it down to babby food before swollow it and a little bit goes a long way for me . Beef fills me up very fast and stays with me for a long time .  I feel your pain and know it quit well myself . It will get better ( soon ) meanwhile try to take advantage of the fast weight loss ( I did )  Your banded brother   Nick

My wife and I had a different surgery (RNY) but before we had that procedure she wanted the band, so we wnt to a lecture series on the different types of surgery. From what I remember our stomaches are around the same size. Three eggs is way to much, try 1, and your stomach is not much bigger than that fist full of cheese. This may be your problem.  You are still seing portions like you used to. You are downsizing them some but not enough  yet. Think of eating what would fit into a 1 cup (mesuring cup). For a meal or maby a little less. As for mushy foods eggs are good, oatmeal, farina, jello pudding, cottage cheese and baby food. (if you can get yourself to eat it) are some examples. Of course the sugar free and low fat types. Stay away from rice it swells in your stomach. I couldent eat food mixed up in the blender eather it just didnt tase right.  Hope this helps some.       Tom

Well that sure doesn't  sound like much fun!   I'm on Clear Liquids for 2 weeks, then regular Liquids for 2 weeks, then Mushy for 2 weeks, then I can move onto Solid Food.  But I have absolutely No appetite  what so ever, I mean None!  I'm having a hard time keeping water down.  And I've been doing what everyone says to do "sip, sip, sip"  but I'll just Burp it up.  And I'm taking Small sips, I mean no bigger than a Teaspoon.  So I'm just going with the flow now.  What stays down, stays down, what doesn't...doesn't.  But I haven't even thought about Regular Food at all.  I was with my Son yesterday, he wanted MacDonalds before his Lacrosse' Practice so we went through the Drive-Thru, It didn't phase me at all, and normally just the smell of that made me drool.  I don't even think I'm consuming a 100 calories a day, if that.  I 'm just drinking water (trying to anyway).  And maybe a couple pieces of Sugar Free Hard Candy.  I'm down 5lbs from Tuesday (Surgery day) I was 322lbs then, today 316lbs.  down 25 total, but I still can't see it.  Anyway I would just do whatever your Dr. told you to do so you don't hurt yourself.

I am not sure what your surgon would say but I got a full feeling off of strained cream of mushroom soup.  That was my life saver.

"Rockn4u"  this may sound like a silly question but what are you drinking your water from. If you are grinking from a bottle you may be getting air in even if you are just sipping at it and using a straw is no good eather, same affect (acording to my Dr.) try drinking from a cup. My wife was drinking from a water bottle when she first come home from surgery and had that problem.

Hi: Your quanity is way too much.  Like you, I would think nothing of eating 6 eggs, bacon, toast etc, for breakfast before my surgery.  Now, if I can eat on scrambled egg it is a lot.  To be honest, soft boiled egg or poached egg seem to sit better in my pouch.  And remember that the size of your puch is about the size of an egg. As for "mush"  mostly that is cottage cheese, mashed yams or sweet potatoes, yogurt (low fat no sugar), mashed potatoes.  At least that is what my surgeon left me eat.  I am now 3 months out and eating semi-solid foods.  Chicken and ground turkey are my primary meats.  Beef, pork, ham, lamb still give me problems -- 2 bites and I am blocked.  Most fish if broiled or baked is ok.  I have developed an aversion to tuna salad.  It was one of my staples for a while but no longer. The big thing is quanity.  My surgeon insists that I keep the total quanity at each mean between 1/4 and 1/3 cup. Hope this helps. Good Luck. Rich

Hi Guys, Thanks for the support. I kinda figured it was a quantity thing for the eggs,  as for the chicken or beef, it was tender and I chewed it to mush before swallowing. Still need to experiment I guess. I just wi**** was an easy thing: get surgery, then go with the flow. I'm finding out that as I  knew it isn't a magic wand... BUT  there is more to it than I had anticipated. I have to relearn to eat (go figure, Doh!) which isn't an easy thing for a 50 year old. Cream of chicken, mushroom and broccoli  are very good, but not solid. What I crave is solid.  One bad thing I found I can keep down when munched real good is Pringle's chips. That I find satisfying unfortunately. It's the one thing I'm glad I won't be able to eat as much of as I used to (Chips). I really appreciate to be able to share my... I was going to say "growing" pains, but they are the opposite: what are they called? (loser's pain's? Thinning pains? Bandster's pains? or just plain pain?) on this forum. I'm sticking to the liquid stuff till Sunday to settle what I have put my stomach thru in the last couple of days. Rockko, you may not feel the hunger now, I didn't either the first few days either, and I truly hope that it stays this way for you. May your willpower be stronger than mine

Regards,
Marcel
