3 days post-op and need help with diet!

Just got out yesterday from the hospital after a laparoscopic RNY on 3/26.   First few days have been difficult but every day gets a little bit better.  The problem is that I am confused over what my diet should be.  I am just moving to the full liquid diet and I know that I need at least 60 grams protein each day however I need to limit that to 3 ounces (90 ML) every hour to avoid over-stretching the stomach.  How do I do this?

Any advice for a newbie?  How does everyone get through this?   Much thanks. - Barry

My liquid phase lasted 3 weeks and I lived on ISOPURE from the GNC store. It is 40 grams of protein in a 20 oz bottle. My doc had us on a 40 gram protein per day diet so one bottle was the days worth of protein. The taste wasn't so hot but the colder it was, the easier it went down. Hang in there, as you said, each day gets easier and before long, those first days are only a dim memory. Welcome to the loosers bench, I moved over for you and there is a nice warm spot next to me!

This is a big help.  My doctor and the nutritionist both told me to only have the ISOPURE a few times a day but at that level, it is impossible to get the protein. Besides ISOPURE, did you have anything else with them?  I am thinking of adding plain yoguart and no sugar applesauce.

Getting in the protien that early on was hard for me, I just went with a protien shake(Atkins or other) or a powdered protien mix. I would drink an ounce every 15 minutes, its liquid so it will pass through your new stomach fairly quickly and easily. I had trouble getting a lot of liquids in through out the day but we do the best we can. Check out some powdered protien to where you get the highest amount without a lot of sugars and carbs and try to mix it with some 2% milk if needed for taste. Sip on those all day and you should be able to get most of your requirements in. Hope this helps. Welcome to the losers club!

Thanks Ben.  I think I'll pick up a few Atkins shakes.  I remember those from my low-carb days.  Do you find that you can drink any of the flavors or do you only limit yourself to Vanilla?

Hi Barry, I used and still do for that matter Isopure low carb mix from GNC. It is a little higher priced than some mixes you can get, but it also has vitamins and minerals. If you get the gold card you can save 20 %.  You can drink more than 3 oz an hour. I talked to my surgeons Phys. Asst about this before I left the hospital and I was told by him tha****er or any thin liquid will pass right through. I asked him why they tell everyone not to drink over 4 oz an hour and he said that they do not want anyone to strain the stoma while it is first healing. He said I could take small drinks,  not to be chugging or gulping any thing. I would compare it to pouring water into a funnel, it will back up but does pass right through.  pan head
