I can get my proteins in with bars and shakes but meat gives me alot of problems. Chicken, beef and pork is all I have tried and for the most part it just wont stay down.  How do you guys make it if you can eat meat. I need ideas please because what I have tried so far just isnt working. I can eat steamed shrimp also but that and shakes and bars is getting to me.

have you tried using ground turkey or chicken to make burgers, meatballs or meatloaf?  i find that goes down well and give me no problems at all.  tuna and salmon are also great

It has to be moist.  I have eaten steak, pork, chicken, and lamb.  If it is moist or with low fat gravy, I can eat it.  I have to cut it in very small pieces and chew it very slowly.  But I actually prefer eating seafood now.

Dry tough meats are bad for me as well. This recipe is a staple in my house. Try getting some chicken breasts (I buy the Great Value Chicken Breasts at Wal-Mart, 6 full breasts for 5.50), and a large can of cream of chicken soup (don't worry, you won't be eating the soup), mix the soup and a can of water, then with a whisk mix it until lump free , then pour the soup into a baking dish, season the chicken breast and lay them in the soup, if the chicken is frozen, then bake for one hour in a 400 degree oven, if it's thawed cut that time down to 40 minutes. Trust me, you will not find chicken this tender anywhere. And it's pretty dam good, too. -----Also try deli meats like turkey breast. Always buy the good stuff, if I eat the cheap deli meat it makes me sick to my stomach. I buy ButterBall Oven Roasted at Wal-Mart, it's 4.58 per pound. Make sure whatever you're going to try doesn't have a lot of fat, and it's not greasy. Either of these will usually make RNYers sick. I'm 8 months out and still have problems with dry meat getting stuck. Fairly common with RNY from what I gather from the other guys. Just be careful and try new things one at a time. That way when you run into something you can't tolerate, you'll know what to avoid. Another thing to keep in mind is some foods not tolerated early on, are tolerated further out. So if you run into something that gives you that "uuuggghhhh" feeling now, give it some time before you try it again.  Hope this helps! Ronnie

As Ronnie said, baking chicken in a soup (we like Campbells Mushroom here!) is a great way to get "back" into accepting meats, just cut your bites TINY and chew, chew, chew! Myownself, I used to LOVE -- and I mean love -- steak! But now, a teensy little 4oz Filet does quite nicely tho I can only handle about 2 oz of same. Gone are the days of the 24oz Tbone or strip steak...and ya know, I really don't miss it at all! Turkey's still fine, and sausage, hot dogs etc. etc. My only real problem seems to be with pork chops. I used to be able to handle quite a few, but now even a teensy 2 oz piece is so TOUGH to chew and the only case I got of "foamies from meat" was from a pork chop. So they're out for now.... I'd say for me, the shake/bar is my brekkie each day, soup for lunch and a salad, rice or baked potato and some kind of meat is what I eat just about every day. It may sound boring, but after 25 weeks, it works for me.... Jim

hey,

i've sent a couple of these posts out over the past year. same problem. so let me tell you what worked for me. first, the guys are right, the meat has to be moist. i gave up chicken because i can't get it moist enough unless it's in a soup. i couldn't eat solid foods for almost the first 8 months. then my doc said to try filet mignon. yeah, ok, well it worked. about the only meat i eat is beef. now i have to eat if very slow and chew the f out of it but it stays down. i had meatloaf the other night and it came back up because i ate it too fast. so try little bits of beef and eat it slow. give that a try. now i still don't do fish because it's just to dry as well but i'm experimenting this weekend with some red snapper in sauce. let's see how it goes. one more thing, watch the protein bars, they can be like candy.........carbonblob

Thanks for the sugestions and the help guys. "Carbonblob" yea I do watch the protein bars read the labels carefully. Usually get the carb diet kind without sugar, atleast the bad kind. Going to try baking a couple of chicken breasts in soup tonight for dinner, let ya know how I make out. Thanks again guys!!!

The soup worked great, chicken was nice and moist and went down without any problem. Tonight I am going to try turky brest cooked in one of those oven bags with the vegies. A friend of my wifes had the surgery and cookes it that way and she says its very moist as well. I'm always up for trying anything, let ya know. And thanks again!!!

Yup. Get used to it, because many of us (not everyone) will have meat problems from now on. I'm getting pretty close to 2 years, and I still yakked on turkey at lunch yesterday. Can't handle: - White poultry (all types) - Beef brisket/corned beef - Pork chops or roast - Country ham Goes down just fine: - Fish or shellfish - Dark poultry - Ground poultry, beef or pork (theoretically corned beef hash, but the grease is a killer) - Cheap ham (parts is parts; fee-yuuzed...) - just about anything that is stewed - Sausage One of my near staples is shredded pork roast, AKA NC barbecue. Roast a Boston Butt for about 8 hours at 250F, shred or grind it when done, and add a vinegar based sauce. The fat drains off, and it's amazingly tender. I've done the recipe here before, and if you're interested, I can repost it when I get home.

Simple, good for you and really tasty. Walmart Normandy mix frozen veggies frozen ground turkey light seasoning (make sure you stay light on the salt) Thaw the frozen turkey Brown the turkey in a big pot. saute an onion at the same time with the turkey throw in some garlic add the frozen veggies put the lid on it and let it steam until the veggies are done. Add some Texas Pete's to it and you're grubbin on a protein filled, easy on the belly, moist, addicting dinner.
