General Weakness

Hi guys, looking for some insight from you.  As many of you know for about 6 weeks I was on non-anabolic steriods due to two torn ligaments in my foot/ankle.  While on the steroids, the weight loss was strong just as it was before I went on them.  I went off the steroids about 5 weeks ago.  Since then, the weight loss slowed to a crawl.  Here is the progress before and after the steroids.
Date Weight Loss this Week % Loss of left this week Total Pounds Lost
1/28/2007 275.8 5.8 7.9% 76.4
2/3/2007 274.2 1.6 2.4% 78.0
2/10/2007 268.2 6.0 9.1% 84.0
2/17/2007 265.2 3.0 5.0% 87.0
2/24/2007 261.2 4.0 7.0% 91.0
3/3/2007 264.4 -3.2 -6.0% 87.8
3/10/2007 263.6 0.8 1.4% 88.6
3/18/2007 261.8 1.6 2.9% 90.4
3/24/2007 259.6 2.2 4.1% 92.6
* % lost left is % of weight I lost verses the amount left towards my goal weight.  Dates are dates of weigh in. Last steroids were 2/24/2007.  My question is about strength, or rather weakness.  In the 4 weeks since I have gone off the medical steroids for inflammation (not strength), I have lost a total of 1.4 pounds.  My diet includes about 65-80 grams of protein a day, 64 oz or more of water a day, about 600-800 calories a day (upwards to 1,000) on some days, and I work out 6 days a week either swimming or lifting/elliptical for 40-50 minutes with some weightlifting a couple of days a week. But I'm wasted tired and weak most of the time.  Particularly in the upper body, which is surprising considering all the swimming I've been doing.   My last labs were normal range for iron, Vitamin D, Vitamin B, Calcium, etc.  I've been taking the supplements for each.  I know I have lost inches, but I'm neither getting the weight loss or the energy boost I expected from losing almost 100lbs.  I had more energy at 320lbs than I do now at 260.  My wife is frustrated because I don't have the energy we both thought I would have.  Even though I know I can't go back to them due to all the side effects, I felt tremendously better when I was on the steroids for those 6 weeks.   Other  than the weakness I feel great.  I wish the scale would drop at a faster rate but I'm more concerned with the weakness.  Any ideas out there? Thanks, Greg

Hi Greg;   I was feeling tired; just plain exhausted; but the blood work all came back normal.  I added a liquid B and iron supplement and it has made a real difference.  I get it at Wal-Mart; it is in a red and white box.  it is SSS  Tonic tastes like crap; but I no longer suffer from the tiredness.  hope this helps.  mark

I found it on the web.  Says that it is 12% alcohol.  Did you find that affected the weight loss in any way from the sugar?  At what point in your weight loss did you start taking it?

I recommend liquid B and Iron also but I use the liquid B complex and just increased my iron through increased mutli vitamin dosage.  I also had a couple of days I was wiped-out and tried abot 8 oz of OJ because my wife suggested maybe my blood suger was low.  It really helped but if I drink too much it makes me sick; I guess from too much sugar.  So its balancing act.  I have also changed my B12 intake from 500 mcg to 2500 mcg.  I gt all of my vitmains and supplements from Wal-Mart or Walgreens.  I also check my lables.  The 12% alcohol keeps me from trying such products.  I don't need any new addictions.  But go with what works for you.   Best of luck.  Drained is a no good way to feel.

Greg, *post above.... remember, the "lag time" for metabolism to return to stasis following steroid use can be as much as 3 to 4 weeks.... Just sayin'...  Don't get impatient about the loss, But do maybe look into upping your Basic B-Vitamins... Best Wishes- Dx

If all else fails...take a week off from the gym.  Sometimes we just over do it, and don't give our bodies enough time to recover between work outs..a week off will allow your body to "reset" itself and build mucle and possibly give you some much needed rest.   Scott

hey Gregg, i second another post. cut back on your swimming. i would also double up on your protein and go up to 1500 calories minimum. i don't think you're giving your body a chance to rest. with that much working out and again, at our age, you need to recover i think you're overtaxing your system. plus, you might be going into fat storage with those few calories you're eating. believe it or not, you can use protein to lose AND gain weight. so i would cut back the cardio and eat more and take more b-12. i know this sounds like the exact opposite of what you need to do but try it for a week and see what happens. i doubt you would gain weight and i bet you start losing again.......carbonblob
