Can you suddenly become lactose intolerant?
Hi,
I had a small amount of milk this morning (about 2-2.5 hours ago), and about 1.5-2 hours later after that I had a bad case of the hiccups, complete with spitting out froth and what I thought was curdled milk (sorry for the graphic description)
After a while it got worse to the point where I barfed what I estimate to be the quantity of milk I drank this morning, and it was curdled.
I know it's bad to throw up with the lapband, but this was more like regurgitating. I also had problems yesterday when I ate cream of whatever soup.
My question is can you become lactose intolerant all of a sudden, I have never been before?
Has anyone experienced this?
And, if so, is it a permanent or temporary (how long?) side effect of the surgery?
This is really weird.
I'm guessing yes. I wasn't before RNY and was completely and totally intolerant after, whic put a real crimp in my Carnation Instant Breakfast protein intake plan. Now 6 months out, it is better but I still lay low on dairy, I use skim milk when I use milk at all and mix water, not milk, like before surgery with any kind of cream soup. I had Broccoli and cheese sopup at Panaera Bread for lunch this week and it all came back. I believe it was too creamy. Broccoli and cheese on a baked potatoe at Wendys and Arby's don't bother me at all. Go figure. Also I learned by barfing, that cheddar cheese works, american processed (yellow) cheese is a guaranteed barf; process oil and fat content.
So in summary, my guess is, the milk could have been bad or going bad, but you may have a newfound intolerance that may or may not improve with healing/time.
Good luck wit that.
I am not really in tune with my body. It never occurred to me that the reason that I have bad gas and cramps after eating ice cream, milk, cheese was a lactose thing. I swiched to the lactose free milk and all is better. It has also slowed my ice cream eating. I never had any of these issues before the surgery.
