Hey Guys - My wife of 34 days had some form of WLS about 6 years ago.  She said the doctor actually removed some of her intestinal tract for some reason. Any idea what this procedure was? She doesn't know what exactly they did! Thanks

I like to think I've done A LOT of research leading up to my decision, including researching many of the procedures that arent done much (if at all) anymore. I can't recall ANY procedure where they actually REMOVED any part of the intestines... unless during the procedure, the doctor noticed a diseased portion (ulcerated, cancer, etc)  and removed THAT portion as a preventative measure. in the last 6-10 years, the main procedures done were RNY and VBG.  I'd bet she had one of those.  With either one of those, most doctors would have removed a diseased portion, but left a healthy portion alone (other than the rerouting done with the RNY) Yes, the band and DS were both done, but the band was still in clinical trials here in the US, and the DS was even less common than it is today (which is still uncommon) is she having issues with it?  a doc could always do a CT scan, MRI or upper GI to get a view of what was done.

Sean's got it, Most likely it would be one of these- Roux-en-Y, Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy, Duodenal Switch, or Fobi Pouch GB  It's a bit odd to NOT know which one..... Give the Doc a call? I had good portions of my Duodenum, Jejunum, some of my Ileum and even small portions of my Large intestine removed… But that was all from "Repair" work due to complications, not standard practice by any means. Not enough info there to hazzard a guess... Sorry. Best Wishes- Dx

There is a procedure called the mini-DS (see thread on the DS forum) which is not really the DS at all.  It's done by a surgeon in your neck of the woods, and from my understanding the surgeon (the only one that performs this surgery) removes part of the intestinal tract.   I'd find her surgeon and find out what kind of surgery she had....at the least she should be having regular follow ups and blood work for any type of WLS.   Scott

Thanks for all of the replies folks.  I also thought it odd not to know what was done.  She just yesterday saw an internal medicine doc for all of her issues.  He was also VERY interested in getting ahold of that surgical report, and he will have it soon. Thanks again.. I'll shoot an update soon.
