Beer and WLS

I have been looking around the forms and have not found an answer. Is beer out after I have WLS? I know the part about dehydration but if I am careful and make sure I get plenty of water during the day surely 1 or 2 won't hurt me. I don't know about the rest of you but nothing taste as good as a nice cold beer after you have mowed the yard.

Dx will undoubtedly chime in with the "skinny" on that topic...but I can add that I used to LOVE beer...by the dozens...

Now? I just dont care much for same....a nice glass or red or a scotch on the rocks works much better as the carbonation bugs me somehow...

But your mileage may vary!

I've been instructed this way: No alcohol for at least a year after my surgery. Nothing carbonated. Can help with stretching of the pouch. Not to mention, beer aint the best in the world for you. Based on that, I may have to say that sudz are a no-no post-op. But hey, everyone is different. You prolly need to consult your surgeon. I'll admit, i'm gonna miss a tall, frosty of Killian's.  But, I also miss ice cream, ooey-gooey pizza, fried chicken tenders, orange juice, etc. I know what those things in excess plus my abuse of them did so, i'm stayin away from em.

OK, Maybe More than You’d ever want to know… There used to be a simple way to pass this info on, But when “the New Look” of the Board took over a few months back A Lot of the links were broken… So, some of this works, some not… Just throwin’ it in a pile for those who are curious. Alcohol? Also a pouch irritant, but more problem than that. While you are in those first 6 to 9 months While the weight is falling off so fast, The liver is already being strained. Alcohol on top of that can cause Big Liver Problems. Most Docs say No Alcohol for at least 6 months. Even with that- About 5 1/2 months out I had a glass of white wine. Actually about 1/3 of a glass And that’s when my ears got all red and My lips got numb. I used to be able to out drink an Irish Sailor Because my system was large enough to absorb Much abuse long before I felt any effect. Now? I have the “Woozy Threshold” Of a 4 year old girl! Do be Extra, Extra Careful! When it comes to drinking. Many, Many folks Who had the rare and occasional drink Prior to WLS, fall quickly into Alcoholism Post-Op. It substitutes for the “comfort” they no longer get from food, And because the “Kick” is much more “Pure,” The addictive quality/power of Alcohol is greatly increased. Just be extra Aware. Don’t look up a year down the road And think- “I never thought this would happen to me!” I’m able to enjoy a beer now, for the last couple of years, even with the carbonation. Just made the step-over addition transfer along the way…. (Do check some of the links below…)

Hi My surgeon sees no problems with occasional alcohol for me.  I don't know if it is because I was a relative wls lightweight.   Also my procedure was a vsg, not rny. However I totally get Dx's comment about addiction. Coincidentally, I went for a coffee last Sunday with a guy who had a vsg last August.  He has lost about 100lbs - down from 341. This guy is in the wine business and drinks quite a bit - maybe 4-5 per night.  Whether he should I don't know.  Rick

I can enjoy an occasional ****tail now and then, but beer is right out. Echo the earlier comments about the carbonation just leaving you bloated. Miller Lite was extremely filling and didn't taste all that good. Bombay gin on the other hand....

My worry wouldn't be the alcohol content as much as the how the carbonation will effect your stitching. I myself love cask conditioned ales, but will have to say goodbye to them after the surgery.
