Cigars...

I'm not a full time smoker by any means, yet I do enjoy the occasional cigar. Brands, and gauges, vary. I get tips, or read things, hear things, on various cigars to try. Some I enjoy, some simply suck, but I guess that's neither here, nor there. What I'm wondering is if my RNY surgery is gonna affect my taste in cigars? And, for that matter, in booze, when I eventually get the green light to have the occasional snort? Am I going to have to research wines, and whiskeys again? Anyone else run into this?

It is funny you say this. I have a Humidor full of Cuban's that I have no desire to touch. I smoked for a number of years and after I quit cigs I would have the occasional Cigar & enjoy it. After WLS & the exercise that I do, I have no desire.  Wine, I had it 3 weeks after surgery, no problems. The doc does not recomend it at all. I have had white & red. This is the only alcohol that I drink. Most other people drink as well without a problem. I am staying away from beer & mixed drinks (too much sugar & carbs). So I say GO FOR IT!! (but I am not a doc).

As a fellow cigar smoker, I understand completely.  When I smoked the last cigar before my surgery, I thought “I wonder if I will still enjoy this particular cigar on the ‘other side?’” It’s going to be interesting to see how the changes in my body affect my tastes.

Best of luck!

I have a fairly extensive collection of very fine cigars (about 1,200 cigars) that I started collecting about 8 years ago. I too was concerned about losing the taste for them. I didn't try any for the first 3 months just to give the surgery plenty of time for complete recovery. I have had probably 10 cigars now in the last 6 months and I don't find any loss of taste at all.  Even prior to the surgery I would only average less than 3 cigars a month and my average post surgery is even less so far. This is a vice that does not contribute to weight gain so it's not something I have any plans to give up. I don't need to drink to smoke a cigar and if I want something to compliment the taste of one I really like a good strong cup of Cuban "Cubita" coffee. D: I also love cigars. My humidors are stocked with hundreds of great aged sticks.. I smoke 90% of my cigars when golfing.. 2-3 per 18 holes.. I really enjoy them greatly... They have not had any bad results to date.... Some day when we have the mens forum annaul "PICNIC" I will have a fine smoke with you and my fellow WLS men. Kev-

I had to add water to my humidor today and I thought about asking what people thought about smoking them post-WLS.  I haven't had one in nearly 4 months, but normally do about 1 a week. (At one time I did 2-3 a day, but that was when I was in school and could sit outside all day.  I was also stupider then, school does that to you.) Anyway, I decided before asking I'd do a search and see if it had been covered before.  Sure enough, y'all are were on top of it. If any of us ever get together, I'll bring them for who wants them.  At my current consumption rate, I probably have a lifetime supply, even with my ever-increasing life expectancy.

I did read somewhere that smoking/ tobacco use of any type can lead to ( along with "The Big C") ulcers in post-op RNY patients. However, I am almost 5mos. post op and have been a good boy up till last week. Enjoyed a Fiiiiiiine Onyx Reserve Mini-Bellicoso. So bold, so velvetty smooth, such a perfect smoke. OK, boys.... Post the highlights of your collection!!!  This IS AFTER ALL THE MAN'S FORUM AND WE MUST ACT LIKE MANLY MEN. LOLOLOLOL In the spirit of the request, i offer my favorites currently residing in my little stogie cave. El Rey Del Mundo Flor de Lianeza Maduro Fuentes Don Carlos #2 Fuentes Hemingway Signatures La Gloria Cubana Serie R #6 Perdomo Cubano Parejo Belicoso Fino Perdomo Reserva La Tradicion X Maduro 5 Vegas Gran Reserva Torpedo Maduro Among others. Yeah, as some of y'all can immediately tell, I like em with plenty of torque.

Highlights assorted Padron 1964s (these do everything right, every time) assorted Ashton VSGs (the Corona Gorda is one of my favorite cigars) assorted Opus Xs (all left over from a big purchase in 1996, didn't care for them much at first, bought them to give as gifts, but they got good around 2003 and still improve) box Chateau Fuente Sun Grown box CAO Maduro Churchills (used to be my go-to smoke) box Monte #2s, Island (I like them, but they put me on my rear) box each Cohiba Robustos, Siglo I, Siglo IV, Island (if they were rolled consistently, there'd be nothing better) box each San Cristobal La ***** & El Principe, Island box Saint Luis Rey Serie A (the perfect morning smoke) Trinidad Trinidad, Island (only 1 left, and as good as they are, the price is just too high to restock) I waste a lot of money on my hobbies.  There are more, but these are the ones that "impress."  Many of the others are cheap smokes that I happen to like.

Nice. Funny how sometimes the cheaper ones are outstanding.  The Punch Robusto comes to mind. A nice, peppery tongue lashing for a very economical price. The 5 Vegas Torpedo is the same way. You can get a box from cigarbid.com ( is that considered spam? If so, sorry board admins, i'm just relayin info to the brothers ) for like $40 all the time.  I could start whining about how much I miss indulging in a fine Figurado with a pefectly mixed Maker's Mark and Coke or some fruity XO cognac but I stepped on the scale this AM and for the first time in almost 8 years(?) maybe more, I'm under 400lbs.  Maybe i'll fire up that Onyx mini-belli hidin in my briefcase..... Life is good.

Yeah, one of my favorites for years was a La Unica Maduro.  When I first started, they were like $1.10.  Either they changed or I changed (some of both, I'm sure), and now they are just so-so.  But even at the height of the cigar boom, when every week a dozen new sticks appeared for $8+ each, that one was available and dependable. Under 400 for the first time in nearly a decade, and five months after being solidly in the 500s?  Yeah, that' a good reason to celebrate.  And if you celebrate with something that doesn't have calories, all the better.
