so sorry to hear about the accident Melissa, however, since you've had surgery and it sounds pretty bad I would opt to see a physical therapist before doing anything. you might really hurt yourself if you don't have ROM or full range of motion. if you got a green light i would start by saying who gives a crap what other people think when they see you running. next, i would do very simple and basic leg exercises with hand held weights or no weights at all to start. so, squats with arms folded in front of you, lunges, calf raises can all be done without equipment. if you have access to a gym, then i would throw in leg extensions and leg curls on those machines. then do some leg presses if they have one of those pressing sleds. the point is, you don't have to have a gym, you can get a good leg workout by just using the first exercises I mentioned. I would do 3 to 4 sets with 15 to 20 reps. again, just clear it with your doc first but these are great starting routines a lot of people use for leg workouts. there's a lot of runners on our board that i know will chime in and give you better advice so good luck.......Carbonblob

Hi Melissa, I agree with CB.  Having had several surgeries, the Physical Therapy excercises will really help.  You can see your physicaly therapist or look it up online.  One thing I would suggest is trying all of these exercises and run in the pool first.  A big part of this is building the muscles and ligaments first.  With the pool you can do that in a less stressful environment.  As you build up those ligaments, tendons, and muscles the pain should decrease.   How long have you been post op?  That is probably another factor.  It takes a while just for your body to adjust.  It's like learning to walk again.  It probably a two year process at least - just like a toddler.  So sorry to hear about the accident. Blessings, Greg

My last surgery from the accident was 05. My WLS was 06 so Both are a work in progress........I have the go ahead on the exercises .......But, I had put it off because the weight had to come off or the pain was unbairable! Now the pain is only when I put on a sock or something like that were I put all my weight on one leg..... Then it goes away after a few seconds. Someone on a nother board said they were told you can not run on a new hip....ever! I was Like NO WAY.

I am now 140 and I can do so much but, I think I will try my pool like you said and go from there....Unfortunatly my deductable has not been met and going to the doctor right now would be like so much more...I know I know its worth it....Just need to try myself first then if its not working see him again..

THANK YOU!
