Been here for a while...but lurking! My date is March 26th...RNY with Dr Irgau. Finally all approved...getting everything ready....except having a difficult time trying to lose weight, getting ready for surgery...not wanting to let go of old habits yet. After surgery, I'll have no choice. Take care all, Al

Hey Al,  Congrats on the date and everything. It is very hard, before surgery, to let go of those habits. I was lucky, if you can call it that, in that my doctor didn't require any weight loss or pre-op diet. He did require me not to eat solids the day before surgery though. The nutritionist recommended that I ditch caffine for awhile too. I will tell you this, every bad habit you drop now is one less you have to deal with afterwards. Let's assume for a second that you didn't drop any habits now. After surgery your stomach will be very fragile, and for that reason you will have to stay on a liquid diet for two weeks. This usually consists of all liquids that do not cantain sugar, caffine, or chunks of any kind. After being on this diet for two weeks, with the usually much reduced appetite, it is much easier to forget those bad habits. The hard part is, once you're able to eat a little more, not re-introducing these bad habits back into your diet. The surgery provides a little extra will power, but you will also have to use a little will power yourself. Good luck with the surgery. You'll be on the loser's bench before you know it. Ronnie

Ooooooh,...you'll have a choice.  The cost may be more expensive, but you'll still have a choice. Your choice is now.  You are choicing to do this.  You need to choose to follow the plan to get the results I anticipate you expect. You are correct, eating less after surgry will be easier because you will fill up faster and not have hunger or much of an appetite.  You may have some mental cravings. So the pre-surgery thing is about your attitude and determination and it medically is about ensuring your liver is as small as possible and pliable enough to be pulled back/out-of-the-way of the stomach it covers for the WLS to be successful without liver damage. You can do this.  You will be grateful you did this. Adn it helped me to be successful to remember this, any weight you lose pre-op starts you rapid weight loss from a lower starting point before it starts slowing down.  Hang tuff dude and make it work.  I'm cheering for you!!
