Feeling Guilty

The other night was my father in laws birthday and as on every family birthday, we celebrate with food.(Sucks)! So he requested lasagnia, since I am still on the soft food diet, my wife made a special bowl of just sauce layered with cottage cheese and sauce and matsarella cheese. I had some and it was a dream come true. The next day I had it over a poached egg for lunch and it was the best. I am feeling guilty because it was so good. It had some ground meat and the regular tomatoes and seasonings. it filled me up with just the small regular portion and stayed with me for the longest time. I was not hungry for hours and I was satisfied. everything that was in it was on my soft food diet, but why do I feel guilt??? I even rode the exersize bike afterwards scared that I need to get those calories burned before I packed them on. I had not been losing weight for the past two weeks and was discouraged. But in the past three days, since the b-party dinner, I lost 5 pounds. I guess I am starting to ramble, I do this when i am nervous, I have only posted a few times and read the board everyday and see how supportive you guys are. It is truly wonderful! I now hate birthday parties because of my family still celebrates with food. I suppose if my wife can keep making me the special dishes it will be better. I was worried about her with her trying to lose weight and me just getting the surgery and dropping weight faster than her, I thought she was kind of jeolous but hopefully she will be supporting me and I her. Sorry for the rambling, Ben.

Hi Ben, congrats on getting through it without getting sick and still losing weight.  You are at that point where the weight falls off.  The only thing I can tell you is to not be guilty but be paranoid.  That doesn't last forever and you don't want to get into any bad habits along the way.  Birthday parties (unless you have 4-5 a month) should not be a worry.  It's the making that a meal afterwards that you have to watch. Good to have you on the board. Take care, Greg

Thanks for your response, I have been seeing a few viewings and no responses and I started to get really worried. So foods like that are not something I should be having? I thought that it was the noodles that were bad for me, is it the cheese and meat? I am just starting out and I dont want to get into the wrong habits. My sister had the sugery the same day as me, we actually had the same dr and same room. She had a piece of cheeseburger and a few fries, her stomach was ok afterward. I guess it isnt a matter of whether your new stomach can handle it but its a matter of do you want to put those kind of calories back in your body? I dont know where to go from here, I am confused and a little high strung from the diet. I have never not been able to eat whatever and I guess thats why I came to have the surgery.  I dont really have a support to talk to at home that knows what I am going through. Thanks again.

Hi - Actually, what you ate seems fine, except that it may have been a bit high in fat.  You could use the reduced fat versions of the cottage cheese and mozarella and it would taste just as good.  Both the meat and the cheese are good sources of protein too. Just use your own good judgment and common sense when trying to adopt an overall balanced and healthy eating regimen, and you will be fine :) Have a great day, Mike

Thanks for your support Mike, the cottage cheese was lowfat , I should have said that in the first place huh? I will be keeping closer to my diet from now on, I dont like the guilt I was feeling from eating that type of dinner. I had an egg for breakfast at 9am and still feel really full. Is this diet basically like the Atkins diet? I notice that there is a lot of concern over getting in protien before anything else.

Ramble on Ben, That's what we're here for.... The Cottage Cheese with meaty-spaghetti sauce and a little mozzarella cheese in the micro-wave is a WLS staple! I had it 3 or more times a week. Also good if you whip an egg into the cottage cheese first.

Sorry to just "copy/paste" some other stuff I’ve sent out before- But it sure saves typing time- hope some of it is useful-------

For some other 'pureed ideas?' Mine are a little on the "Safe Side" as to consistency, But just "What I did." Other stuff may work better for you….. ---------------------------------- Here are some other "Meals" that I used at the Mushy/Pureed Stage- :Cream of Wheat with a teaspoon of protein powder mixed in. :Super Soft "Cheese Grits" (cook in skim milk and add cheese) ..........(those "Butter Buds®" sprinkles are great early on) :Really Mushy Oatmeal. Splenda and even a touch of cinnamon and rocks ..........(Vanilla protein Powder in this is good too) ***:Refried Beans with a spoon of enchilada sauce and cheese on top. (my ‘Go-To-Food.’) ..........(or just buy a small order at Taco Bell! Loved those) :Yogurt (CarbControl or SF or Lite,) ..........( jus****ch out for more than 4gs of sugar) :Campbells Bean w/Bacon soup, ..........(run through the Blender. -food of the gods) :Tomato Soup with Cheese and/or some protein powder ..........(try with spices for variety- Basil/Italian flavors, Curry Powder, etc) :Cream of Mushroom Soup, Cream of Chicken Soup ..........(be sure to chew those mushroom/chicken bits) :Instant Mashed Potatoes with Fat Free or Low Fat Cream Cheese ..........(Also good to make with Chicken or Ham Bullion instead of water) :Scrambled Eggs with Cheese (My "Go To" Favorite) ..........(can top with spoon of Non-Chunky or blended Spaghetti Sauce, ..........Chili, Cheese sauce, every type of cheese that will melt, etc) :SF Puddings! The Jell-O Cheescake SF Pudding –w/ cream cheese blended in Rocks! ..........(A little SF strawberry Jam, thinned with juice and spooned on top is great) :Egg Salad- Boiled egg mashed with pickle or olive juice, pepper and Mayo Things that I had success with running through the Food processor/blender- :Canned Carrots, ..........(Added Splenda Brown Sugar, Butter Buds® & cinnamon like Sweet Potatoes) :Deli Sliced Chicken, mayo and pickle relish with a spoon of Cream Cheese ..........(Like a Chicken salad Spread) :Chili! With or without beans, then melt cheese over in the Micro wave Those are some of the "favorites" of the "pureed stage" that come to mind. Hope these help. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Now, A lot of people have trouble getting Those Protein Powders to mix with stuff. Someone at my support group Said she always thought it made stuff taste like Someone had thrown a "Handful of Chalk Dust" In her food or drink. Well the solution? Liquid into Dry! Suppose you are trying to add some to Yogurt or mashed potatoes. Take your scoop, (or actually only ½ scoop) Of the powder and put it in a coffee cup or small bowl. Get a fork, And slowly drip some cool water into the powder while Stirring with the fork. Don’t try to just add the liquid. Attempt to make a very thick paste. Once you’ve got it into a thick paste Then slowly add more drops And stir some more until you get a thinner paste. Keep this up until it is the same consistency As the food you want to add it to. By not having "liquid" per se, The powder can’t clump up And hang onto "bubbles." Even mixing this up ahead of time And keeping it in the fridge Is good. Then just take out how much you want And stir it into your food. I have great success this way Adding Protein Powder to- Yogurt, Soups, Oatmeal, Smoothies, polenta, etc... It really helps going into shakes/smoothies. You don’t get that "foam" on the top That, no matter how long you run the blender Just stays forever. It also gets rid of the "powdery" texture That can hang on otherwise. You’ll be on to full out "Real Food" soon. Just take it SLOW…. Best Wishes- Dx

mr. Ben: Thanks for the post. I could really relate.... from FEAR to FAITH...I spent so many  years, Months, weeks, days & hours beating myself up over food It was ingrained in me ! Post WLS it has been an whole new ballgame.. learning new skills, attitudes, habits , beliefs, feelings, confidence and power. A quick feeling I got reading your post was just how scarry this new life really is..so many past failures and disappointments... it  was hard to get my head around the fact that with this "TOOL" I have the advantage for once. Believe me I do not take anything for granted... I have huge respect for my responsibilities in insuring WLS success.. but 13 Months and 150lbs later... many trials and errors... many successes.. several failures... and here I am.. healthy.. happy... and part of a group of men who have walked in my shoes... I am no longer alone if I chose not to be.. Welcome... it gets different..it gets hard..it gets easy..it gets real... Kev-

Thank you Dx-Kev-CB, I really think I need the support I get from you guys! I am glad to see that there is so much concern for my efforts. I have not ever been the person to get support but always there to give it. It nice for a change. I have tried some of the mushy recipes that were posted and appreciate the rest, I will be printing those out and hanging them on my refridge. It has been scary and satisfying at the same time, this is truly a "tool" that i need to learn how to use to my benefit. Changing my diet for the better has been hard, but nothing good is easy! After this little episode of worrying about what I ate, kicked my senses into gear about getting some exersize. I never had worked out a day in my life before and now I have started! i take breaks at work, get out from behind my desk and walk the parking lot. I am still a little self concious that people see the fat guy walking around but with this it will all be different soon. After making dinner for my kids I have started getting on the bike for 10 minutes and then switching to the gazzelle for another 10 minutes. I know this isnt much but its a start. A far cry from my workout ethics before! Thanks for the support again and I know with you guys behind me I will succeed! Ben
