Male Bandsters

Last Thursday, I had Lapband surgery.  I have checked the Lapband Board for post recovery eating habits but most of the members are women.  I would like to know what a male bandster eats during a typical day.  I am on clear liquids and I need something to shoot for. Thanks, nickw

Hey there Nick ( nice name )  I have been banded for about 18 months now , I eat anything I want , just not very much . This morning I had two eegs and some cheese on top . That was after I went  to a spinning class , Had to get my workout  in . There are a few of us( banders )  here in the locker room .  It will get better after a while and you will find out what you can eat and what you can NOT eat .  I have a hard time with bread . That OK with me though I have never been real big on bread anyway .  Nick

Lap Band on 12/04/06 with

Hi Nick,

I just had the lapband done on Dec. 4th 2006. So I'm still pretty new with it.

I can eat whatever I want. But I do have to eat slow. I only had1adjustment on the band so far. I go for the next one this comming Friday.

When you start eating regular food you'll start slow and see if the food agrees with you. I haven't had a problem with any food. Like I said though, you have to eat slow which is good. If you eat too fast it kind of backs up on you. I look forward to my next adjustment because I still feel I can eat too much before I feel full.

I'm sure everyone eats different things but the thing is the band controls how much you eat but not really what you eat (some people have trouble with different foods esp. bread abd pasta) I don't have trouble yet, but after more adjustments who knows? You still have to watch what you eat and lean towards healthy eating and stay away from junk food. And you have to exercise.

But there is no set food for a typical day, you'll work that out for yourself.

Best of luck.

Dan

Howdy Nick   Congrats on getting your Band installed...it's going to be a great device, if you learn to use it properly!  I've been "banded" for nearly a year (March 21st 2006) .  What the other guys have offered is pretty much true for me as well.  For me, sandwiches are a thing of the past...I've done a very well done grilled cheese a few weeks ago but that's about as adventurous as I'm able to be.  One of the oddities I've noticed with my Band is the fact that a "good" food one day...just might not want to cooperate on another day. I think it's more about listening to your body when it's trying to give you the "I'm FULL" signal...for some it's a sneeze, or a hic-up...for me, it's a slightly runny nose for some reason.  But when I recognize the sniffle...it means I'm done, put the fork away NOW.  Typical day for me would be something like a SlimFast and a banana in the morning to mid-morning.  Lunch is maybe a salad from Subway (small town, my choices are limited) a couple of days a week, and I always have a pot of chili in the fridge.  For some reason I never tire of it for lunch and I know for me it's a "safe" food...good amount of protein, lowish fats...safe.  Dinner can be an adventure..for some reason I'm not sure about I've got trouble with slow-cooked meats..so, no more of my own historically good BBQ ribs...no steaks....no crockpot meats like roasts etc.  but I know that other guys have NO troubles with them so it's got to me a "me specific" thing I think.  My suppers are usually a bit of pasta with some sort of meat sauce, or pretty much anything I guess...just in a whole lot smaller quantities.  The big problem I got myself in after the first 6 or so months of being a bander as I started to allow my quantities to creep up again...I started to recognize that cookies and the like went down reallllly easy....and I started almost unconciously drinking tea or Crystal Light with my meals...all NO NO NO no's.    So I guess, my take is you'll find it's not so much what I can't eat, is how much of it do I NEED to eat to be full.  I know that's a pretty ramblin' statement, sorry..it's late.  Pop up another post, or feel free to email me if you ever have anything you want to discuss!! I have had more issues geting a root canal. I may be in the minority,  Had surgery on Friday- Home on Saturday, Drving on Sunday and back to work (desk job) on Monday. For 3 or 4 days you wil feel like someone hit you in the stomach with Bricks--but that does pass quickly. This is such a miracle to me Had my Surgery 11/10/2006 and today I am down 86 pounds!! It is a Trip for sure. Best of Luck

Adam, I went into the surgery thinking that any discomfort would be similar to an "ingrown toenail" (quote from Gil Gerard - Action Hero Makeover).  In reality, my recovery has been more like getting over a stomach virus or flu.  I am 5 days post op and I feel OK but not great.  The night in the hospital was hard.  For some reason, I did not ask for morphine and I am sure that affected the quality of my stay.  I had my surgery on a Thursday, took a sick day on Friday and rested over the weekend.  I have a desk job and made arrangements before hand to work from home the week after surgery.  Personally, I could not have gone back to the office any earlier due to pain, fatigue and the clear liquid diet. Don't be nervous.  Any pain or discomfort will be temporary. Good Luck! Nick

Congrats on your surgery! I think you will find different answers to your question. The band is a very versital tool. I took the extreme approach I guess, I stuck to a strict low carb/low fat/ high protein diet and it has worked well for me. Excercise is key as well. Good luck amd cangrats. Work that band!

Been almost a year since my Lap Band Surgery.  Like most, I can eat almost anything... just very small portions.  I am much tighter in the mornings and loosen up at night.  For me, I  usually have a protien shake in the morning,   Lun*****ludes a salad or a small microwave dinner Lean Cusine/South Beach etc.  Back in the day i could easily eat 2-3 of them with no problem.  Now, I often do not finish a whole one at lunch time.  Dinners are usually fine.  I "can"  eat more than I should.  Follow the diet, drink your water, exercise and take full advantage of this wonderful tool.  Every day is an adventure.  Some days you will find that foods will work and other days they will not.   At this point you need to follow your doctors advice and stick to the liquids...  it gets old but it will be worth it in the long run.   WLS was the best thing I have done.  I am currently down 135 pounds and feel great.
