Fellas?  I hear you all say sip sip sip sip so you won't get dehydrated (sic maybe) so I've been kinda practicing.  My question is, how often do you sip, every second?  Every 15 seconds?  Every 30 seconds?  You get the idea. And, These adkins advantage shakes are pretty nasty, anything I can do to make it better or what other shakes do you drink and what is unjury?  Just sitting in my office enjoying the new daylight savings time and watching the sun rise on a beautiful day thinking...... Have an outstanding day! Bob McQueen "Do all the good you can, when you can, to whomever you can"

HI Bob, it really comes down to how much you can drink per sip after surgery.  Use a straw and you will get the idea.  You won't be able to do the big inhale sip, but you will be able get it in.  On the shakes, look up Champion Nutriion Pure Whey online.  They are really pretty tasty. Unjury is pretty nasty in my opinion.

My Nut says no straws, because you take in too much air. You end up with a pouch full of mostly air, not liquid.

Bob-

I can't stand the Atkins drinks either - too much soy for me, which makes me a little.... odiferous.  I bought a four pack, and have thrown them out because (IMHO) they are NASTY.

I'm drinking Low-Carb Carnation Instant Breakfast (blue box, not yellow) and Myoplex.  You can buy the former at some grocery stores, and the latter can be purchased at Sam's Club ($2.25/ea) and other places.  If you need additional protein, my favorite protein drink is called Profect.  It comes in a test tube bottle, and is about $3 per drink, but it's really good, and all protein.  If you've never seen Profect, you can see a pic of it at http://centerforswl.com/?pagename=DisplayProducts&product=PR OFECT.  Package is very flashy - much more so than something I would normally purchase - but it's really, really good.  Myoplex is 16oz with 43g protein, Profect is 2.7 floz with 25g protein, and I'm not sure about the Carnation Instant Breakfast.  The premixed versions of all are better than the powder - which gets a little gritty.

Re: H2O I take a sip every 30 seconds or so when I'm sipping - but your mileage may vary.

H bob, I know what you mean--I still feel waterlogged at times. I've come to enjoy super-cold LoCarb Slimfast drinks. If you can handle the extra 70 cals., add a packet of Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast for a taste boost. Also, blend 'em with a few frozen strawberries or blueberries or smidgen of sugar-free PB. And in-between, water, water, water. You'll eventually find that you "want" to drink frequently. Good luck. My surgeon recommended the High Protein/Low Carb Slim Fast - and i think they are very tasty.  I also have theZero Carb IsoPure Vanilla Powder (got it fairly cheap at shopwars.com).  I mix the IsoPure with skim milk, a couple chunks of frozen banana, and a squirt of Sugar Free Davinci Syrup (bought on amazon.com).   I read several posts saying the IsoPure was less gritty than others - it's still a bit gritty - but, 1 serving (2 scoops) has 50 grams of protein, so I've been having one every morning.   I've been doing that routine (1 IsoPure shake, 2 slimfast shakes, and 2 very small low fat/low carb meals per day - not to exceed 1000 calories total) for just over 3 weeks and have lost 25 pounds.  I have the same questions about the sipping, and was trying to practice, but then decided to drink "normally" until surgery so I can get plenty of water in.  I figure I'll have the rest of my life to figure out the sipping thing    Best of luck to you.....

Bob, Learning to sip slowly was just as hard for me as learning to eat slowly.  Drinking anything too fast is uncomfortable in the first few weeks.  It feels like you swallowed a golf ball and may even cause you to vomit, but drinking gets much better after a few months.  My advice on sipping is to drink everything like it were a hot cup of coffee, as opposed to gulping an ice-cold beer.  Take small swallows paced at whatever speed you are comfortable with.  I will take some getting time to get use to, so practice. As for protein shakes, there are a lot of good sugar free protein supplements available and you will just have to experiment with them until you find something you like.  Unjury is the first one I tried at the recommendation of my surgeon.  It is pretty good but a little on the expensive side.  I like the unflavored mixed with tomato juice.  I also like the various flavors of Syntrax Nector.  Both are available online.

Hey Bob, I think the water question had been answered. Protein mixes are just like everything wlse on this journety.  You have to find the one that works best for you. I, for one, am a major fan of Unjury.  I am very  limited on my budget these days, but this is the one place where I don't mind spending a couple more dollars.  I feel that I get what I pay for.  The unflavored variety really is unflavored.  Also, it is a much finer powder than other brands so it dissoves easily.  Because it is a soy product, there is less likelihood that you may have intolerance to it after surgery.  Over the course of the last few years, I have tried many many many protein products that were being used by my sister and then by my wife.  Unjury is my personal favorite out of all of them.  The only thing you have to be careful with on Unjury is the same as any other protein powder.....dissolve it in a warm liquid (90 F) before using it in anything hot (above 130 F) or it will curdle on ya and that's gross. Good luck to you and welcome to the journey of discovery that is life after WLS!  It's a trip.

Good Morning Bob, You know that feeling of taking a drink and it going down the wrong hole? That's kind of the feeling you get when you forget to sip after surgery. Also, after you take a small sip, don't swallow, first seal your lips together so air can't get in, then swallow. Once its down, Repeat. It will get progressively better over time. I'm 7 months post-op now and can drink as fast as I want to. Yes, even gulp with no problems at all. The point is don't fear not being able to drink normally after surgery. Any surgery on your stomach will cause these ill effects, its not just the RNY.  Shakes: I could never find a shake that I cared much for. My nutritionist didn't like it much, but with diet modifications, was able to work through it. I still, to this day, do not ever drink protein shakes. I do have the occasional protein bar, I like SouthBeach the best. The bars have about 20 grams of protein each @ $1.20 each. Just know that your tastes will change a LOT after surgery. What may taste good now, may taste awful afterwards. After surgery, it's best to buy in small amounts, that way you can try the foods and drinks out to make sure you like the taste and that they don't give you an upset stomach. Ronnie

Yo Bob! Water: I just always keep a bottle with me, so I naturally sip on it through the day. Protein: I have tried a TON of products. Isopure works well for some people....It makes me "sacrifice to the porcelain god", if you know what I mean. For a long time I did a mixture of chocolate Designer Whey and Trader Joe's Soy Protein (unflavored) in milk. It made for 40g of protein mixed with 8 oz of skim milk. Good...but tiring. NOW I've found Unjury, and the flowers are blosoming...Birds sing regularly, and all the other Snowwhitian things that happen when you're happy. I have only used the unflavored and the chicken broth. The broth was good. I cooked everything to do with chicken soup, then stirred it into my warm (but not too hot as mentioned above) Unjury Broth. It was really tasty. My new favorite is to mix a scoup of Unjury unflavored powder (20g protein) with 24 oz Crystal Light. (the ruby red graprfruit is the best). I take it with me and sip away at it. It hardly flavors the CL at all....only makes it a tinge creamy. I really wish I had found the Unjury earlier. Escpecially in those first few days/weeks when it was so hard to eat ANYTHING. Also...it was my experience, as was many people's, that my tastes changed with surgery. The protein shake I ate before surgery made me gag after surg. Best of luck, Jake
