How Much Before You Dump?

Just curious, I'm almost 5 weeks out of RNY, and dumped once w/peanut butter, which was recommended by my NUT. Awful feeling. Anyway, say I want to "jump off the wagon", and try something I really shouldn't have, like an Oreo, or ice cream, or a White Castle? How much could you have before you dump? A bite? Half? Sometimes with no side effects at all? I don't know. And please don'r critique,  'cause I'm not looking to jump. Looking at food still kinda makes me queasy. But I was just curious, and I'm sure some of you guys long outta surgery have experimented. Thanks....

Simms, The “Classic” Company-Line is- “Careful about intentionally testing to see if you Dump, You may just Dump, or Worse, (much Worse) Find out Early that you Don’t Dump at All.” I still Dump here at 3 years.  Avoided it completely for the last year until accidentally Got over my sugar limit with- (OF All Freaking Things!) A CitraCal Creamy Bite!! My max is about 3gms.  Rules out Ketchup, Bar-B-Que sauce, Some stuff like that. But they make most everything in “Carb-Control” or “Carb-Monitor” brands now, so I don’t “go without.” My first year I had a few bouts but finally got religious about label reading.  Mine is the “Early Stage Type.”  Soon as the “offending Sugar” hits my pipes all of the water in my body goes to my intestines to join the party!  I feel like I’m dehydrating then – “Everybody Out!” trip to the bathroom. Sort of like food poisoning sensation/reaction. Cramping bowels, clammy sweating, shaky feeling. If I hurry up and drink a lot of water, It tends to be over soon, and I don’t seem to have the “longer term” Sleepy thing that some get. I have No problem from fats at all, though some people do.  Mine is strictly a Sugar thing. Makes it easy to prevent.  I’m pretty good about picking things at a restaurant that don’t have sugar or honey or such.  Like I can eat Teriyaki stuff, which is sweet, so long as I don’t Eat much of the sauce, just the meat. Mine is just quick, big, and extreme.  And happens on the tiniest of sugar. I can have slightly similar but minor symptoms, if I drink along with a food that has a lot of carbs.  Noodles in soup will cause a little faster trip to the bathroom just not the cramping and only slight shaky feeling.  Some fruit will get me-  Peaches, but not apples or oranges.  I’m fine with watermelon but have had a problem with cantaloupe if it’s really sweet. Grapes will get me if I don’t eat them along with some Non-sweet food like cheese. A “ White Castle burger” shouldn’t be much of a problem.  The bread may give you extreme gas, particularly early on.  The Oreo?  That would be like a steaming bowl of Ex-Lax for me. Different levels are tolerated by everyone.  Some (around 30 to 40%) Have no problem at all. All I know---http://obesityhelp.com/forums/men/a,messageboard/action,replies/board_id,5479/cat_id,5079/topic_id,3235238/ Hope this Helps… Best Wishes- Dx

I actually have only dumped once, and that was off a Starbucks latte.  I ordered sugar free and they gave me a regular one.  I don't think I exhibit the "normal" signs of dumping.  I throw up a lot.  I don't know if my body tells me that what I ate is not good, and I just throw it up.  But I can eat some candy or small amounts of ice cream without any symptoms.  I wish I dumped more actually.

I was one that intentionally tested...and I don't dump unless it is fried food or meat that I don't chew properly.  I wish I had that dumping as a tool.  For you at 5 weeks this is sort of like Adam and Eve.  Eat of all the trees, but not that one over there.  Look what happened.  It's better not to test the waters and just assume all that stuff is bad.

Dumping: Being the "push everything" to limit personality type I can share my experiences here. My first dumping episode was om SF popsicles at about 2 weeks out... They had too much sugar alcohol and I ate 6 or 7 over a short period of time. I got sweats, light headed, faint anf very uncomfortable... Called my doc.... he quickly diagnossed the symptoms.. and I switched brands and ate fewer at a time.. it stopped. At 10 Months I entered the "rebel" stage. In this stage I was ready to try "ANYTHING"; kinda like the teenager living out of his parents house for the first time. I tried every food product I had been craving for 10 months. The first thing I craved was french toast w/ suryp... I ordered it... ate 5 or 6 bites...it tasted really sweet, soft going down, it was good... no dumping... The lesson for me was that Small amounts were O.K. AND not the forbidden fruit.. I had hoped they would be. I did this same experiment with, Starbucks oatmeal rasin cookies... no harm... but not a gig deal either.... I have not had one in Months... they are not that good or that good for me... I tried "candy" around Thanksgiving and christmas.... again.. tasted sweet going down... no mjor dunping.. but no major THRILL either...Tried Ice Cream.... small amounts... same experience... The amazing thing was that during this phase.. I was losing weight like crazy. for the only time in my life.. I was able to eat anything I wanted and lose weight.. really strange..... I went over this in my head and came to the conclusion that my obesity was a result of total calories eaten every day... not the foods eaten every day... what a revalation.... Looking back at my last 5 years eating.. I rarely had ice cream; candy, frenh toast..... In thinking back I realized I devoured massive quanities of the following foods: PIZZA: I would order a extra Large  ( Double Crust/ Double Meat/ Double Cheese)just for me delivered to my house and I would eat it alone... all of it.... DRIVE THROUGH FAST FOOD: I would order 4 double burgers 2 large fries and yes 2 large drinks ( I wanted the drive through gal to think I was ordering for 2).. I would than park nearby where no one could see me ( behind the mall), and eat every single morsel... stuffed to the gills... I would that find a garbage can in which to eliminate the evidence of this binge. Another favorite was to go to the "HIGH END" market stop by the deli counter and buy enough lunch meats, cheeses, chips, rollls, loaves of bread and dips to feed a super bowl party.. I would than go home  and have a party for one..... I would do each of theese over and over weekly... In looking at this behavior I concluded that I was consuming 5,000+ calories per binge..... One last favorite was to drive through Krispy Kreme and order 2 dozen hot donuts... by the time I got home I would have a dozen left... nice..... So my conclusion for today is that as long as I am not hurting my body, I am getting adequated balanced nutrition, I am not grazing all day, small amounts of foods which fuel my health are ok. I am committed to the Sunday weight In... and if my weight increases I will look at my habits and adjust them for a healthy successful post WLS life. So for me today... dumping has not been a problem, but I know it will always be something I must respect. I did not think I would go off on such a riff.. but I guess I needed to share Thanks again Kev-

Simms, You ask a good question, but unfortunately only you will be able to answer it.  We are all different.  Some of us dump at the drop of a hat; others seem to be immune.  Some of us get really sick; some of us just get a little uncomfortable.  I’m somewhere in the middle.   I avoided anything that I thought would cause a dumping episode for about six months, then I accidentally dumped from too much fat (about 30 grams in one meal).  I learned my lesson and I haven’t dumped from fats since, but I’m careful.   I haven’t been so careful with carbs and have dumped on a number of occasions.  Remember that it isn’t just sugar that you have be careful of, starchy carbohydrates are no different than sugar as far as your body is concerned.  I’m a late stage dumper.  About 30 minutes after I eat I get a queasy stomach and very sleepy, kind of like having one drink too many.  I then have to lie down and take the “Carb Coma” nap.  In an hour or two I wake up feeling great.   My advice is to assume you will dump and not to test the waters.

May Your Lantern Burn Bright,
Paul
