Gas Relief: Acidphilus Supplements

Hey Guys,

As you may know, I have been having pain from either a narrowed intestine (partial loop) with trapped gas or maybe from trapped gas alone.

Day before yesterday, I purchased some Lactobaccillus Acidophilus tabs and the pain and swelling decreased dramatically. While there is no medically accepted proof that this stuff gives any relief whatsoever, I am certain that in my case it has greatly decreased abdominal pain.

"Your mileage may vary," but it's worth a try.

Best Wishes,

Dave

hey Dave, no, you're right, that's heavy duty stuff. we gave it to one of our dogs who had your problem. it's a natural thing to have in your intestines and it cleared her problem as well. acutally, she had surgery but lived on this in paste form for the rest of her life. good move.......Carbonblob

CB,

It does seem pretty amazing. I was hurting for days and this pretty much cleared it up. My tabs have one other bacteria, vinegar yeast and B1, B2 (probably to get them all to replicate).

Mayo Clinic's site says "results are mixed", which as with Coq10, probably means "works for half of the people who try it."

Best Regards,

Dave

Dave, I had to have a probiotic – (I think was Acidophilus Lactobaccilus) (It was Reuteri®) To repopulate my guts with good bacteria. You can also get these "good bugs" by eating live culture yogurt. I had problems at first- (around fifth month) after several rounds of Anti-Biotics I had to take Flagyl to kill off "the Bad Bacteria" followed by Lactobaccilus. In my case it was ‘cramping gas." No problem since. Just Normal intestinal output. Many By-Passers use probiotics preventively to keep "Gas/odor" under control. Best Wishes- Dx

Dx,

I suppose the food went into my small bowel and crowded the gas more quickly and thoroughly than it would with someone non-op. I was in a good deal of pain after eating, but with the Acidophilus, that has improved to a "cramp here and there." Still hurts sometimes at night if I fall asleep and lay too flat on my stomach for too long.

Thanks, JP!

Yeah, I'm hoping that being left with very little stomach acid might actually make this one of the supps that is more beneficial to RNY patients. A complete stomach actually serves to kill off a lot of bacteria with its acid. on the other hand, it seems that a pouch practically allows you to get a direct infusion of just about anything you swallow.

It would be interesting to know which supplements or drugs are relatively ineffective from being destroyed by the stomach and if they might actually be more effective in RNY people.

Thanks for the good info.  You are a wealth of knowledge.  I am very glad you are feeling better.  You had me worried there for a while.
