Steroids, Bad word or not?

Hi Guys

I’m a little over four months out from my Roux-Y Gastric Bypass, down 100lbs yea!

Of course with all that fat gone and going, I am starting to hang, you know flab’s of skin.

Before my RNY I did nothing for my health. Now I go to the Gym 6 days a week. I’ve been doing that for three months now and I have a personal trainer. I do cardio and weights. I am very, very weak. It’s going to take me a long, long time just to get in some sort of shape.

I was thinking and doing research on steroids to help me work out harder. I was also thing of why not build up some muscle to fill in the lose skin instead of PS.

My researching is finding out the moderate use of steroids for muscle building is not as bad as the media makes it out to be. Like any drug, abuse it and it will screw you. I am 51 years old and I do not want to be a body builder or a muscle bound person. I want to fill the void where fat use to be. I do not want to go under the knife for PS.

What do you guys think?

Thanks

Ken

Working out, very good idea. Taking steroids, very bad idea. Just my opinion, your mileage will vary. JP

Ken,
No matter what anyone thinks about it, I doubt any of the fellas here are going to actually encourage you to engage in illegal activities.

Be Well,

There is no substitue for hard work. It may take a little longer and will certainly require a bit more effort  but in the end you will be healtheir and happier. One of the reasons most of us were/are fat  and tried every diet and/or pill out there is we are always looking for a quick fix, the short cut. It took you 50 years to get where you are, it won't be right overnight, as you well know. The other thoughts is we are addictive personalities in general, as evidence by our bad eating habits. Post op there is always the possibility of replacing that addictions with another, don't pick steroids, very bad for your kidndies. You don't want to get healthy just to have to go on dialysis.

Hi Ken,

Here's what bodybuilder veteran Dave Draper says:

Good Luck,

Ken, Please, don't even think of going there. one thing is for certain. steroids trick your body in the worst way. if you got in a serious accident your body will not know how to handle the situation and you'll go into shock easier whereas if you didn't have them in your system, your natural resources would take over. ok, it's extreme but you need your body to do it's best in a worst case scenerio and on steroids, you can't do that. another point, you'll get hooked. not on the drug but the results. they will help but then you'll have to deal with wanting it all. just a thought. some of the other guys said it before, just train hard, it's all you'll need. i had a lot of weight on me and i tightend up and i'm older than you. just give the surgery a chance to do its thing. btw, nobody on this board, i bet, would be able to look like the guys in the magazines. those guys have the genetics and the sheer will to work out in the fashion it would take to get in that type of shape. it's a whole lifestyle to look like that. so just work hard and enjoy yourself. you'll get plenty big with just regular workouts. so in conclusion, i would not advocate going down this road but you asked so that's my two cents.......Carbonblob

Ken,

Dave again. Here's another article that looks at both sides of steroid use:

http://www.trygve.com/mfw_faq.html#steroids

The entire FAQ section has a lot of good information about bodybuilding. Best part is, it's in no way supported by the supplement industry.

Best Wishes,

Dave

Probably better to avoid those things, Ken.

It might be worth it for someone who stands a chance of being a top-level competitor (=already looks like a bodybuilder who could almost win a competition), but not for anyone else. What's worse than anything is, they seem to cause dependence and long term depression.

All the Best!

Hi Ken, I had to take steroids (prednisone - not the anabolic type) for issues of inflamation due to two torn tendons.  Although I did not have any trouble with my pouch, the surgeon told me (after 6 weeks on them) that the steroids are one of the worst things and can cause ulcers in the pouch and intestines resulting in having to repeat the RNY surgery. I just went off them last week and have been going through a 5 day crash of my system.  The kind you are talking about are far worse and not worth it.  You had RNY to decrease your health risks and now you are considering something that could drastically reduce your life expectancy just because you don't want some flabby skin?  What's the point?

I would look into some other supplements first that are non-steroidal and work out hard.  If that doesn't satisfy, then the PS is the way to go - not steroids.
