Fluid intake

Hi guys I am 6+ weeks out of a vsg and struggling with consuming enough fluid [and protein for that matter].  I'm in Australia and some of the products referred to on this site are unfamilar to me. Are there any general hints as to how to get through enough fluid in a day - and hence cut down my diarrhoea? I have many more concerns but hope they will diminish with time. All the best Rick

Hi Rick, are you able to buy sugar free koolaid or fruit punch?  I found this really helped me with the fluids because the taste kept bringing me back for more.  A good protein shake should augment that if you need it.  one 8oz serving of Champion's Pure Whey stack will give 23gr of protein and it tastes good.  Hope this helps. DOn't know if this will help but I found some vegatable protein at the market and it was the consistency of flour, which got me thinking, ....I used a shaker and mixed the protein powder with some beef broth, then mixed it into the ret of the can of broth as it heated and made the broth more like thin gravy, so I got my liquid broth and my protein at the same time. I would also mix my protein powder into lowfat yogurt and SF instant pudding.  Mix it well to keep it from lumping-up into little sand balls. Best of luck to ya.  Stay the course.  You won't be on liquids and soft foods forever.  Its a period for you to relearn how th e eat and yuor body/digestive tract to relearn how to digest food.  With any luck, you will both be on the same schedule.  Pu**** too much and you are just going to feel really bad, barf or both. Rick, With the liquid, I just carried around a ‘sports bottle’ of water ALL of the Time.

For protein, When I was just starting out, I would ‘sneak’ a little protein powder into just about any soft or mushy foods and drinks. A lot of people have trouble getting those Protein Powders to mix with stuff. Someone at my support group said she always thought it made stuff taste like someone had thrown a “Handful of Chalk Dust” in her food or drink. Well the solution?  --Liquid into Dry! Suppose you are trying to add some to Yogurt or mashed potatoes. Take your scoop, (or actually only ½ scoop) Of the powder and put it in a coffee cup or small bowl. Get a fork, and slowly drip some cool water into the powder while stirring with the fork. Don’t try to just add the liquid. Attempt to make a very thick paste. Once you’ve got it into a thick paste,  then slowly add more drops and stir some more until you get a thinner paste. Keep this up until it is the same consistency as the food you want to add it to. By not having “liquid” per se, the powder can’t clump up and hang onto “bubbles.” Even mixing this up ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge is good.  Then just take out how much you want and stir a bit into your food. I had great success this way adding Protein Powder to- Yogurt, Soups, Oatmeal, Smoothies, polenta, etc… It really helps going into shakes/smoothies.  You don’t get that “foam” on the top that stays on top, no matter how long you run the blender. It also gets rid of the “powdery” texture that can hang on otherwise. This worked for me!  Hope this helps you!

Best Wishes- Dx
