Hey everyone. So I sit here thinking to myself, how can I prepare myself to lose some weight before my surgery, which is scheduled for April 2nd. I have a little over a month left and it still hasn't hit me that I am about to undergo a life changing thing. I try to excercise everyday. I do 20-30 minutes in the morning and sometimes another 20-30 at night on my ellipitical. Sometimes it's hard to motivate myself but I do it. My problem is, I enjoy food and it's so hard to start changing my diet. Anyone have any tips on how I can change it? I have started to 2 or 3 times a day. Eating like that has helped me cut down on stuffing myself at dinner. Lately, it's like I want to eat everything. I think it's just my brain knowing that I won't be eating these foods anymore. But yeah, kind of went off subject there. So, anyone have any dieting tips. Any and all responses are greatly appreciated.

Number one tip i have found is to stop eating at 9pm,  that way you are eating late at night or just before you go to bed. The other tip I have even if you do pig out one day, its only one day, you can get back on track the next, don't loose hope, just go right back on your diet. Do have a last supper, at your favorite buffet or all you can eat resturant, because you won't be doing it any more and as I said above its one day it won't kill your diet.

Ken, just a couple----That "worked for Me" (Your Mileage may Vary) 1.)…..Chewing Sugar Free Gum with a strong Flavor. I keep some "wintergreen mix" going nearly all the time. It fought off the "Ketosis Breath" early on, during rapid weightloss But later helped prevent me from snacking. A nibble on "just one" Bar-B-Que Flavored Potato Chip Is less appealing with a mouth full of Wintergreen. Yes? (Clearly it doesn’t have to be Wintergreen, Just what ever you like!) 2.)…..More Fat in my Diet! (Is this man Nuts? Yes, But This one works even for the sane.) I don’t mean slather on the butter, But don’t avoid nuts because of the fat content. A Purdue University study showed that people, Who ate Nuts high in Monounsaturated Fat, Felt "full" an hour and a half longer Than those who ate fat-free foods. Almonds are particularly good at this, Followed by- other sources such as- Avocados, Sunflower Seeds, Flaxseed meal, etc… Even by adding Monounsaturated Fats In cooking or as salad dressings- Olive Oil! Sesame Oil! Canola! These go into "nearly" everything I cook, And they all are excellent Bad Cholesterol "scrubbers." As are the Omega’s such as the oils Found in Salmon, Tuna, and "Darker" Fish. These not only clear out the arteries, But play a role in speeding up the metabolism. A study at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston found that People who took omega-3’s, Burned more calories throughout the day than those who didn’t. And, they claimed to feel "satiated" as well.

There’s a Couple! For a General "Quick-Lose Weight" plan? Atkins always worked well for me Prior to Surgery> I could lose 40 pounds in 40 days.... I always just gained back 45!!  For short run?  Low-Carb seems to work well for many.... Lastly- Welcome to The Men’s Message Board! Hope you find all of the experience, info and support That this bunch has to offer! Best Wishes- Dx

Welcome Ken.  For what it's worth, I knocked off 50+ lbs. in the 3 1/2 months prior to surgery by stopping all flour and sugar and eating lean protein (turkey, chicken, fish) with fruit or vegetables 6 times a day.  Each of the six "feedings" included 3 oz. of protein and 3 times a day it included a small serving of potato, sweet potato or green vegetables while the other 3 times it included a small serving of fruit (1/2 c. unsweetened apple sauce, 1/2 banana, 1/2 apple, etc.). My surgeon puts every one a 6-week Optifast diet right before WLS. Five Optifast shakes per day plus a single meal of meat and vegs. It helps prevent the last supper syndrome, and gets you ready to be on liquid based meals for the first few weeks after recovery. Plus it gets you use to having 5-6 small meals per day, which will be the format for most of your post-op days. I lost 35 lbs on this plan pre-WLS, I use MetRx shakes for my 10:00 am and my 2:00 pm meals which are very similar to the Optifast mix.

Post WLS, I brush my teeth at work with Crest’s Cool Peppermint Liquid Gel three times a day. It has lots of favor and gives you a clean feeling that helps keep you spoiling it with our office assistant’s desktop treats.

I agree, walking mornings and evenings, before and after WLS is great for keeping the weight loss going.
