Thyroid Medication?

Just wondering if any of you guys were on medication for hypothyroid before and after surgery and if there were any problems getting things regulated after surgery.  As part of my work-up for surgery I learned that my thyroid functioning was low and had to start meds for it.  I started at .75mcg and after the 6 weeks it takes to have its full effect I was back to normal levels.  A couple months after surgery my levels were low again and my dose was increased to .88 mcg.  Had to wait the 6 weeks to re-test after the adjustment.  Well, it's still not there so I just got another increase last week and now have to wait another 4-6 weeks to test again.  I know this potentially effects my weight loss and also is part of the issue I've experienced with energy levels, etc.  Needless to say, it's also a little frustrating to have to go through this "trial and error" process to get things back on track. So, I'm curious if anyone else is on synthroid and if you've had a similar experience with needing meds adjustments after surgery?  Thanks, Steve

hey Steve, I was on tons of meds before the surgery and now except for the pain thing the only med I stayed on was synthroid. and i was on insulin and all that other stuff from being heavy. anyway, i was told i would be on it for life but hell, it's a little pill a .1 and that's no biggie. i still take a .1 and that hasn't changed in years......Carbonblob

Thanks CB - my doc was speculating that because of the bypass I wasn't absorbing the full dose and that's why we are needing to keep adjusting to find the right amount.  Doesn't sound like that was the case for you after surgery though.  Just hope we find it pretty soon - I get tired of being tired.

While not a man, my DW has been on the synthetic thyroid med for years. Getting the regulation right can be tricky, and took about 9 months to figure out. Too low and she was tired most of the time. Too high , and she had a tendency to make check out girls cry at the grocery store. It made a huge difference in her, and as long as she keeps it regulated she feels great. Good luck with it. JP

LOL... make checkout girls cry - I understand that so well.  Apparently the low side can make one irritable too - as I've experienced.  I'm generally a pretty easy going guy, good natured and all - before it was adjusted two times ago I was at Costco and suddenly started raging at two people that walked in front of me in the parking lot - cussing them out in a very loud voice, etc.   That was one of the times I knew something just wasn't right! Thanks for the feedback.
