Who is out there?

Hi, I am a 6'1" man, 43 years old, just had gastric bypass surgery (RNY-proximal). I was fairly active as a construction remodeler before the surgery. My beginning weight was 438, at the time of surgery 425, now at 413 (2 weeks out). At night I am finding it difficult to eat and drink slowly, it's not a problem during the day, have had dumping as a result. Getting bored recovering at home, most of my hobbies are active (boating, fishing, etc.) so that makes it tough. If you have any advice, would like to hear it. Thanks. -David

Hi David,

I'm not sure how long ago you had surgery, but I assume you are on liquids or pureed stuff? Maybe go back to gelatins and soups, as you can eat those as fast as you want and they are not as likely to cause dumping. In a few more weeks, when you are able to eat solid food, if you eat fast, you will get full and the problem should solve itself.

I guess the only solution for "cabin fever" is to go out and walk. You should be able to do the other stuff in a few weeks, anyway.

Anyone else?

Good Luck,

Dave

David -=- Greetings ! I'm 13 weeks out LAP RNY. Your stats look good.   I'm 6'2" and started at 348, today 274. I'm just starting to get the urge to eat more during the day.  I would agree stick to the soups and jello and SF pops.  I've been "afraid" to venture into "exotic" eatings yet. I"m enjoying the honeymoon. I still enjoy the soups and beans and SF pops. Are you walking yet? You might be able to ride in the boat, not the same as fishing, but you are out. Is your boat docked?   Hang in there, IT IS WELL WORTH IT!!! Kim L. in SoCA

Hi David - For me a lot of the fast eating problem took care of itself once I got to solid foods and forgot to chew enough that something got stuck - after that unpleasant experience a couple times I became pretty cautious about slowing down and chewing everything thoroughly.  I think it will come in time.  Sounds like you already got some good ideas for staying busy but I would second the one about walking as much as you can - seemed to be one of the best things for me early on. Dave, If you can, get out and walk every day.  Because we have a lot of snow around here, I walk at the mall.  And, afterward usually go in to Borders for a peppermint tea.  I usually find some interesting reading material.  They have a large fishing and boating collection. You might also want to walk around Gander Mountain and check out the new gear.  I think every fisherman likes to add new items to their arsenal. It won't be long before you will be getting out to fish.  In the meantime, chew, chew, chew.  And, eat slowly. Good luck.

hey David, just a word of caution here. i too am an active contractor and i went back to work way to fast. also, i couldn't keep my lunch down. so please take time if your work is physical and try to eat a couple of "practice" lunches before you return to work. i ate yogurt and soft stuff but with the physical work it was just too much. just a thought. take care......Carbonblob

hey David, it was a few months before i started to lift things at work but i had complications that really kept me from being back 100% until about 4 months out. from then on back to 7 days a week. i get tired a little more easy even with the weight loss but i think i just push myself too hard. as for posting pics, i think there's a tutorial on how to do that on your account page or something. i have a mac and so i have to post a pic to my mail, this compresses the pic, then i put it in my account folder off the desktop. a crazy way to do it but it works for a mac and then i don't have a huge file if i want to use a pic as an avitar. so maybe the other guys know a better way but i think there's a tutorial somewhere. good luck.....Carbonblob
