Greetings Locker Room -=- My Surgeon's office called this evening and asked me to bring a food diary for the last few weeks to tomorrows 3 month check.  It seems as my labs for vitamin A were low. Everything else was OK she said. Before I dive into the internet search engines, is this common to the group? Is vit A replaceable? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any thoughts. From SoCal KIM L.

Kim, Was your procedure a DS? Or RNY? There is a need to supplement Vitamin A,D,E, & K (the fat soluble Vits) for DS Post-Ops. Problem with Vit-A is not typically an issue for RNY’s. Since utilization of Vitamin A is interconnected with Iron Levels and Zinc, It could be that a low level in one of those areas is contributing to a problem. Also, Liver? Folks with history of significant alcohol use can develop problems with Vit-A So can folks with Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) which is an inflammation of the liver due to fat deposits even without the use of alcohol. It’s more the result of insulin resistance. Those are the "connections" to Vitamin A problem that I can think of…. It is fairly easy to supplement as long as your Bariatric re-plumbing allows absorption of fat soluble Vitamins. Even replaceable for DS’ers, just need more in order to absorb enough… Hope you’re doing fine on the blood-work soon! Best Wishes-
