Veggie Advice

Hey gang, need a little advice.  I'm over 10.5 months out since my RNY surgery and have lost about 220 pounds.  I feel great.  I take all my vitamins, get plenty of protein and drink plenty of fluids.  I want to start to work some veggies back into my diet.  I need some advice on what most guys have found tolerable but the most beneficial to the body.  I can still only get in 4 to 5 ounces of food at a time, and I know that it's important to get the protein in first before getting full.  Any feedback would be appreciated.  Thanks in advance. John

John, I'm 5 months out and can do steamed broccolli, with a bit of shredded cheddar for protein and flavor.  I usually do like  broccolli and cheese baked potatoe when I go to Arby's or Wendy's or such.  Just cut it up and chew well.  I understand the green tops have the most nutritional value so I start there incase I fill up before I get to the stalk.  Other wise, I don't do many veggies. Way to go on the 200+ in 10 months.  I have similar aspirations. I'm at 131 at 5 months with 97 to go to goal.  Any advice or wisdom??  I hit a plateau for 4 weeks at 280 but that started moving again this past Monday to 277.  Good luck with the veggie thing. Joe

Hey John, The bulk of my veggies are broccoli and carrots.  I throw in a little salad with romaine occasionally.  Although, lately I am craving and eating a lot of pinto beans.  Good taste, good protein and fiber.

When I feel a hankerin' for green I grill asparagus. Then I get naughty and just eat the tips. Great steamed too.

Broccoli is great. (in fact, the best).but beware the gas. Some folks note it makes them gassy.  I also advocate Avacados for the Omega 3's As for fruit.. blueberries are fantastic...so are pomegranites. (Shoot for high antioxident fruits...which means anything deep purple in color)

Holy cow, John!  220 pounds since April is terrific… but you make me a little jealous.  I had my surgery only a few days before you.   As for vegetables, I find that I can eat anything I want without a problem, either cooked or raw.  I generally stay away from the starchy veggies like potatoes and corn and I don’t add butter or anything else with much fat.  Fruits and green vegetables have become my friends as they add so much variety and flavor to a meal.  Meat, cheese, and eggs by themselves get old after awhile.

Paul
