On-the-go Food ideas

Hi Fellas, Well after 6 years with the same employer, I'm finding myself back in the job market. A lot of "irons in the fire" but nothing concrete yet.  One of the jobs I'm leaning towards will have me out on the road all day with no actual office to stop back at except for the end of the day. I'm looking for some good "on-the-go" types of food/meal ideas. Currently, I have access to a microwave and such so that makes things easier to prepare. Any ideas?  I want to eliminate eating out due to the poor choices available and the cost of eating out! Thanks, Mike

I travel alot and have found a few things useful. When driving, I take an igloo cooler with me and carry protein shakes and cottage cheese. Wendy's Chili is good in a pinch. Low in Cal and Carbs, high in protein. I have just started to try SOuth Beach Diet frozen dinners. SO far, so good. Good luck. JP

hey Mike, I do just what JP does. i carry an igloo and fill it with two bananas, two little cups of unsweetened apple sauce, a little baggie of cut up cheese and sometimes a peanut butter sandwich! I like to eat light when I work and thi****s the spot because I can just eat a little all day long. oh, also two bottles of water too. if i'm at home, i just have protien shake for lunch but on the job nothing beats taking along the igloo. it only takes me 5 minutes to make my lunch in the morning and get going. remember, we don't need a whole bunch of food anymore so it's pretty simple. if i had to go to some place to eat i suppose i would have chili or something with protien. good luck on the job hunt. and oh yeah, almost forgot, if you have a microwave, well, you can take the diet frozen stuff you like best and just nuke it. take care......Carbonblob

Agree on Wendy's Chili.  Things I keep in my car: (the list may change when it gets hot and things will spoil quickly),  unsalted and unroasted almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, favorite protein bar (which is Rockin Roll), small pieces of apple, orange, banana, Wheatthins (low fat ones), Triskets, water and extra water (in case I break down in Timbuctoo), Cheerios, dry roasted peanuts.  I keep small pieces of vit. pills in my pockets and nibble on them every once in a while. I also keep a supply of meds in the car.  Hope this helps...Brian

I would pick up a few of those Crystal light single serving packs too.  You can pour that into a bottled water to get a change of taste.   I echo the cooler and Wendy's chili.  Get yourself some of those ice packs to keep everyhing cold. Sorry to hear about the job loss.  What do you do?

Thanks for the help, Gents!! I worked in Customer Service for a telecommunications company for the last 6 years. Now that I've lost all this weight ( and more to go!!) the last thing I want to do is sit in a cubicle for 8 hours a day. That's where my experience and skills are but I'm thinking I'd like a change of pace. Something perhaps a little more labor intensive.  Don't know if any of the jobs will pan out but all of your info helps. Thanks, Mike

Mike, Do you work on the wireless side of the industry, or wireline? If you are in wireless, I could hook you up with many contacts in PA. JP

Mike, When I'm traveling, I keep a few Ostrim Snacks in my breifcase-  http://www.protos-inc.com/FoodForThought.htm  "OSTRIM is the first sports nutrition, low fat, high-protein meat stick made from a combination of Ostrich, a highly nutritious red meat, and the leanest beef available. The 42 gram (1.5 oz.) OSTRIM Meat Stick contains essential and non-essential amino acids, has high protein (14 grams), is 96% fat free (less than 1.5 grams) with zero carbs (under 3 grams) and less than 1 gram of sugar.

OSTRIM Meat Sticks are shelf-stable (require no refrigeration) and offered in user-friendly packaging for convenience and portability. They taste great, are easy to chew and offer the same, or more nutritional benefits as sports nutrition bars." Also most places have 'Low-Carb' choices now-a-days... And any city has those 24hour breakfast joints... Omelets when nothing else will do... (See TuesdayNight Online Support Post above) Maybe drop in and gather up more ideas? Best Wishes- Dx

Mike, I've been supplementing my diet with Profect liquid protein.  It comes in 3 oz. vials and has 25 grams of protein.  http://www.profect.com/  You can order them on their web site.  But I get mine from my doctor's office.  They run about $2.50 each, are small for packing, and taste much better than powdered drinks.

Hey Mike.  I was using those until I found one that has 42 grams in the same volume of liquid for about the same price.  Just in case you want to check it out, here is the link: http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/store/en/browse/sku_detail.jsp? id=YQ-1007 The grape is really good, the fruitpunch is pretty good too.   The extra 17 grams per drink have helped me out a lot.  Just FYI Ken
